Some people refer to jam as jelly (As with the above) I presume you mean Jelly/Jello as you said for desert.
No jelly is suitable for vegetarians (that I have found and as a former-lover of jelly believe me I have searched.
If you and your gran are close you could ring her before had and tell her you cant eat it or you could say you'll bring the desert. You could always say "No thank you, the meal was just lovely and enough"

Jelly (as in the fruit stuff you spread on toast) is usually made from Pectin which is derived from plants so you should be able to eat Jelly.
Jell-O and Gelatin desserts should be avoided by a vegetarian since they are made from animal parts.
Without sounding like a snob, just say "No, Thank You".

Not all Jelly contains gelatin(e). Some contains pectin which comes from plants. You can politely refuse by saying something simple like, "Oh grandma, I really want to have some, but it contains something non- vegetarian. I'm sorry." Or you can call in advance and ask if she is making the treat and if so, ask the ingredients and if it contains gelatin(e), just ask if she can use something with pectin instead. Hope it helps.

I would let your grandparents know before hand that you don't eat gelatin, and ask them if it would be too much trouble to make something else, or just tell them before hand and say its ok and you don't need to have desert. If you are talking about fruit jelly/spreads, then you can eat that, but I think you are talking about gelatin, which is not vegetarian.

well... depend of how much does your grandparents respect your life style. But you can ask them to make agar-agar jelly wich made from sea weed; not animal bones as the regular grenetin jello.
It tastes great and is a great source of vitamin C, A, B and calcium. also provides a great amount of anti-oxidants and prevent a wide variations of gland-hormonal problems your grandparents might find apealling.
good luck and don't give up!
