If you touch a herpes sore, such as a cold sore on your lip and then rub your genital area you can theoretically spread herpes to your genital area. It's called self-reinfection.
This is why it is SO important to always wash your hands after you touch a herpes sore (for example: after you put topical medication on). If you touch a herpes sore and don't wash your hands you can spread it to other parts of the body, like the genital area, or the eyes (ocular herpes).
Good luck!

Herpes is a virus. It can be passed through contact. Most often this is contact between genitals of two different people, or between genitals and mouth (a cold sore is actually herpes which lives on your face).
Unless you are covered with sores or have recently touched a herpes sore and not washed your hands, you should have nothing to worry about.
You should remember, however, that herpes is permanent and there is no cure. Most of the time you will show no symptoms, but if you do have it, it will come back, and can be spread even if you have no symptoms. This applies to cold sores as well - if you have ever had one, the virus will always be there.

no, the only way you can get herpes is through oral - genital or genital - genital, there's 2 different kinds of herpes, HSV 1 and HSV 2, HSV 1 - oral herpes HSV 2 - genital herpes, now tell me this, how can you have oral herpes on your hand or genital herpes on your hand, if herpes was on your hand that doesn't quite make it herpes now does it, if you've had cold sore sometime when you were young you're immune to HSV-1, Herpes is a virus that makes its home in your nerves, that's why a herpes outbreak is a bunch of cold sores and fever blisters, something a healthy person can get. HSV-1 can't really be classified as an STD, because it's not always transmitted sexually, it can be transmission by kissing or even sharing a straw. if you have any other questions feel free to email me.

There are two types of herpes simplex virus: HSV-1 and HSV-2. Both virus types can cause sores around the mouth (herpes labialis) and on the genitals (genital herpes). Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV).
Cold sores sometimes called fever blisters, are groups of small blisters on the lip and around the mouth. The skin around the blisters is often red, swollen, and sore. The blisters may break open, leak a clear fluid, and then scab over after a few days. They usually heal in several days to 2 weeks.
The herpes simplex virus usually enters the body through a break in the skin around or inside the mouth. It is usually spread when a person touches a cold sore or touches infected fluid—such as from sharing eating utensils or razors, kissing an infected person, or touching that person's saliva. A parent who has a cold sore often spreads the infection to his or her child in this way. Cold sores can also be spread to other areas of the body.
