I've seen bakeries advertise that they can transfer a photo on to cakes, but I don't want to sacrifice the deliciousness of a homemade cake. Any suggestions??

Here's a link to an eBay list of edible photo products. Hope this is at least a good start!

I have used rice paper to transfer pictures that I've created onto cakes (hand drawn), but I really don't know if your scanned image would transfer to the rice paper mechanically or not, or if the ink used would be edible. Sorry for the marked LACK of help here, you pose an interesting problem.

Hmmmm...
You could consider making the scanned photo even more personal, by laying a sheet of rice paper over the top of the scanned photo, and tracing the most significant features from the photo onto the rice paper with food coloring (Michael's has an enormous variety). Carefully lay the 'painted' rice paper over your cake, and it simply becomes part of the icing... Absolutely amazing effect. Your cake would be remembered as the most personal expression of caring, ever! Just a thought.

You need special inks to do this sort of thing. The inks are all edible inks that are printed on special rice papers that dissolve into the icing. It requires a special printer that most home chefs don't have. I don't see a bakery offering this service to you to put on a homemade sheet cake, but you could ask.

You could ask you local bakery if they would make the edible image for you (for a fee of course) because you prefer to make your own cake but love the idea of an edible image. They might just do it for you. It never hurts to ask - when my kids were smaller and I had less time the local bakery would sell me sugar cookie dough for the kids it was so much better than the store stuff. Good Luck!

You can go to your local bakery supply store and purchase the special paper necessary to do this.
