Your heart rate should be 50 to 90 at rest. This correction from the previously held normal of 60 to 100 was based upon hundreds of ambulatory blood pressure and pulse studies. If you are always 90 to 100 then your pulse is too high. A higher than normal resting pulse may have many causes such as being physically unfit. More often however it is a reflection of norepinephrine tone - an adrenalin like substance. Since our pulse varies quite a bit during the day the most accurate reproducible pulse is taken upon awakening. At that time it should be 50 to 70. A pulse above this should be recorded and if consistent warrants a trip to the physician who will most likely prescribe a beta blocker. This blunts the effect of norepinephrine. The ambulatory studies referenced about led to the realization that an elevated pulse even when the blood pressure is normal is a surrogate marker for premature cardiovascular disease. As such I would encourage you to monitor your pulse and share your findings with your physician.

A rapid heart rate may be normal at your age but this can be said only after it has been fully investigated. This is because one needs to rule out hyperthyroidism(high levels of thyroid hormone in blood) which can set your heart racing at high rates. Also anxiety, excessive caffiene, smoking can in their own way increase your basal heart rate.
I would suggest you to request you physician to examine your heart (in the form of a formal clinical examination, ECG,24 hr ECG tape/Event Monitor,ECHO of the heart)and thyroid functions before we consider your problem as 'non organic'.

I have this same problem. I went to the doctor and they said that it was irregular-regular (if that makes sense) heart beat. They said I should worry if its irregular-irregular. I have just becme aware of how my heart beats. I thought I was gonna die at first (I was trippin) but now I am used to it and I only went to a heart doctor twice because they wasn't worried about it either. I still live my life the same.
