Here are tips:

1. Take your time - my journey from meat eater took about a year.
2. Start out using some basic substitutes for the meat you are used to in foods where you won't even notice - ground meat replacements are available in the frozen food sections.
3. Leave meat off things that don't need it - pizza, salad, spag, etc.
4. Get some good cookbooks when you are ready to branch into more interesting foods - Moosewood books and New Farm Vegetarian are two of my favorites.
5. If you are worried about what to eat check out the book "Diet for a New America" it will cover many of the health questions.

In your case since you have already started don't get too down on yourself if you eat meat once in a while. You'll find your own ballance whether its vegan, veg OL or light meat eater.

Don't worry. you will get used to reading labels and understanding where the ingredients come from. it doesn't take any longer to shop.

Ideally, look for the "suitable for vegetarians" label. If it hasn't got that then you really need to be sure you know where the ingredients come from and how the manufacturuer behaves. For example, you have to miss most Nestle and Masterfood products, many beers and wines have dead fish and cows in them, yogurts, tinned veggies, ice cream are just some of the silly examples that often contain dead pigs. About 95% of processed foods is not veggie. you'll get used to it and its not a hinderence to your life at all.

Some of the societies like the International Vegetarian Union or the Vegetarian Society have great, free, information leaflets and websites. www.vegsoc.org has great pages and information packs for new and young veggies.

best of luck, veggie for 27 years, never ever thought of turning back, very healthy, never ill, no suppliments...

You don't need to ask a doctor anything. You go to your doctor when you are ill. Vegetarianism is not an illness !

kim:
nice random insult, thanks for that. Why does someone who is thinging of becoming a vegetarian and worried about the ingredients of the food they buy, need to see a doctor ??

They are not ill, they are not saying they are ill, they are saying they want to stick to thier morals.

Feel free to provide a decent answer without insulting me, if you can.

EDIT:
Of course beer and wine have dead animals in them, if you don't know, why comment on it ? I think the bone meal and fish bladders result in the animal being dead. Maybe i'm wrong, maybe there are cows with no bones roaming the fields.

And since when did talking about vegetarian issues in a vegetarian forum make me similar to an aerian leader of genocide ?

And preaching ? I answered the persons question ? did you ?

I do notice you couldn't reply without further insults..shame

Even if you should 'accidentally' eat a meat by product - or for that matter, fall off the wagon (because your body will go through some meat cravings)...

The most important thing to remember is to get up, brush your butt off, and get back in the saddle!

The vegetarian diet is soooo worth it! Don't ever think that you have failed at it - keep at it and don't give up!

- and before you know it, it will become second nature.(though you will always be reading lables, s those food prodcuers are getting pretty trickly)!..

i was the same way a few years..(been a vegetarian for a year and a half and vegan for 6 months). Watch out for lard...and you cant eat mickey d's fries...cuz they are pre cooked in beef fat...Most of the industry fries are more than likely cooked with the same oil that meat is...so you have to ask about that...Read all the labels carefully...skimming has got me in trouble a lot. Make sure that you read rice labels because some rice are cooked with meat for flavor...for ex..it might say chicken extract.

Yes, please speak to a nutritionist about a good diet plan that will meet your needs, especially if you're still growing. You can't live off of fruits and vegetables alone, even if you're a vegan. You have to ease into this sort of thing. You should also try picking up a copy of Vegetarian Times for tips and recipes.

? lol what? just dont eat the thing you think might be meat.. but there is so much more you can eat other than fruits and veggies! you can eat beans, rice, whole grains, nuts, seeds, legumes, soy and (if you are vegetarian) dairy and egg products. stay away from red meats, poultry and fish and you'll be good.

Eat mostly whole foods or foods that are designed for vegetarians. Avoid the packaged pre-flavored stuff that are polluting the supermarket shelves (like rice-a-roni and stuff like that)

First, ask your doctor to refer you to a nutritionist who can help you create a good sound nutrition plan. A nutritionist can lead you down the right path.

A good start would be learning how to fυcking spell vegetarian.

Aside from the obvious things like steak and fried chicken,
there are many things that contain "hidden" animal parts like gummy bears and Jello. Also using animals in anyway whatsoever is "bad" so no more honey, milk, eggs, or butter...ever. And don't even think about putting leather seats in your car, because your immortal soul will burn in Hell for that! Just to be safe you had better not eat anything other than vegetables and tofu, but if you are feeling adventurous, you may want to have a *gasp* peanut! But wait, there are tiny little insects getting killed just so you eat lettuce and that is a crime against nature. If you really don't want to lose your vegany, you should stick to tofu and water, but for God's sake MAKE SURE THERE AREN"T ANY LITTLE PLANKTON SWIMMING AROUND, THOSE ARE ANIMALS TOO!!!

OR you could drop the whole thing and eat meat like humans are supposed to. You know those four little pointy teeth in your mouth? Those are called canines, and are used to tear through meat. You vegaloonies are always talking about nature and crap like that.
