In the beginning of the year, my mother choked on some coffee. It took her a little while to stop and there was a small period of intense coughing and weezing before things returned back to normal.
Earlier today, the same thing happened (though it hadn't happened since the last time) and it was a scary minute or two, just as it had been before.
I wondered how common it is to choke on a liquid, particularly coffee, and if it's unusual that it could happen several times in a generally short timespan to a relatively healthy person. Again, things returned to normal soon after it happened, but having witnessed it two times, I'm worried that it could mean something is wrong. She also thinks sinus pressure could have had something to do with it...might that be plausible?

Everyone chokes now and then, particularly on warm, thin liquids like coffee or saliva. This has happened to her twice in 6 months? That is not considered to be frequent, by any means; if it was happening several times a day, then I'd be concerned. Few laymen know that even ONE drop of liquid entering the area above the vocal cords will trigger paroxysmal coughing. Liquid seldom goes into the trachea because the cough reflex is stimulated if the area above the vocal cords is violated by the slightest drop. Sinus pressure is totally unrelated. When this happens in the future, breathe in through the nose, as it will help reduce the coughing.

I did this just tonight on decaf coffee. I do have a repaired hiatal hernia from birth and I am 53 yrs old. At the time I was running a Vicks Vaporizer and lots of phlegm came up through the throat and the nose. Very scary hard to catch your breath!

I have sinus problems and cough when drinking hot beverages or spicy foods. It's the same when I take a big breath of hot steam from a sauna or something hot cooking. It could very well be a sinus problem..

A little tip for you: Check into a "Neti Pot" at your local health food store, it irrigates your sinuses and you'll never have a cold or sinus infection again. 3 years here, no cold, no sinus infection (used to have chronic infections for several years) no flu..nothing! No more antibiotics or meds for me anymore.

It could be too hot, the caffeine may have bothered her.... She may have sinus issues going on ~

Ask a doctor, these are just some suggestions.

She needs to see a doctor if she is choking on thin liquids. Get her to see a doc and get checked out. She could easily have swallowing problems and aspirate and get pneumonia.
