Tofu can taste like anything you want it to taste like. It is an extremely versatile food. It tastes awesome fried with some nutritional yeast flakes, soy sauce, and some salt and pepper. It also tastes awesome grilled along with other veggies. I would suggest that you get the medium firm, firm, or extra firm tofu. The soft tofu is too mushy. I usually get firm or extra firm because it cooks better and doesn't fall apart easy. The soft tofu is usually for when people put it in soups (like miso soup) or make a pie, like a soy mousse pie or something.
I would also suggest to not eat it raw first. If you haven't grown up with tofu, you probably will not like the taste of it raw. I've eaten it since I was a kid (born and raised in Hawaii) so I always ate my tofu raw with soy sauce. I never cooked my tofu until just a year ago, but I really like the taste of it fried. I use it in my stir fries and stuff.
Also - You should try eating it at a restaurant first before you buy it and cook it at home. If you like Chinese food, go and get something with tofu in it.. They will pretty much always have tofu on the menu.. Also you might want to try eating it prepared at a health food store if you don't know of any vegetarian restaurants or other places that have tofu.
I just discovered a Mexican restaurant (not vegetarian) that has tofu on the menu and they make the best veggie/tofu fajitas ever! They grill their veggies and tofu together with a tasty jerk sauce.
Anyway good luck and I hope you enjoy tofu! It can be very good for your health. It is high in protein, is a good source of iron, and has phytoestrogens which have been shown to reduce or prevent cancer.

It's probably like gelatin cubes that are bland and not sweet. Tofu is basically a "cheese" of soybeans. Generally it is cooked with various sauces or other foods for flavor.
However, it depends on the tofu, since there are a few dozen kinds, as it is like a "cheese", it comes in different types. The most common you'll find in the store is a firm or soft/silken white block type.
You should just order it at a place that knows how to make it. Generally a Chinese restaurant can make a good braised tofu, Ma Po tofu, or similar dishes.

It depends on what you put it in. In general it has the consistency of pudding but it takes on the flavor of whatever you add it to. If you like chocolate mousse try melting 12 oz of semi-sweet chocolate chips and blend the chocolate with 1 lb silken tofu and refridgerate for an hour. You can also use extra firm tofu sauteed in olive oil with yakisoba noodles. Tofu is very cheap, healthy, and fills you up. It's well worth trying.

Tofu is kinda cheep and you should at least try it once.
Tofu will taste like what ever flavoring you put with it.
I use silken tofu for smoothies. It gives a smoothie a creamy texture.
I use the firm tofu for a stir fry with veggies. Add spices and the flavor will come from the spices.
After you open it you should just put the whole container in a tupperware container to preserve it.

Tofu tastes like anything you cook it in. You can substitute it for chicken in any recipe. Teriyaki chicken? Just marinate the tofu in Teriyaki sauce! Whatever your favorite sauce or something is, just cook the tofu the same way and the only difference will be the texture! I would not recommend eating tofu by itself, but that's a personal taste. Try it, you may like it.

By itself it tastes like nothing. You have to put in something. Marinate it or somehow give it flavor. Personally I would recommend you use Firm Tofu or the Golden Tofu.

It tastes like whatever you cook it with. It absorbs the flavors around it. It will only be as good as the sauce or oil you cook it in. Go to your chinese resturant around the corner and order something with tofu. They will know how to cook it better than you and you will get a good representation of what it can taste like.

Tofu is incredibly versatile and widely known for being amazingly talented at conforming to the taste of whatever it is cooked with. It is often known to resemble the absent meat product in a meal when grilled or barbeque. Alone, it is very bland.

I like making a veggie dip with silken tofu. I just blend a block of tofu with a packet of dry buttermilk ranch dressing. Yum!

Tofu is very bland and unapetizing eaten alone. When you mix it with another ingredient, like chicken stock for example, it takes on that flavor. I really like the texture of it.
