How many times do we have to go over this?

High cholesterol is one of 9 factors for heart disease including: diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, physical inactivity, age, gender, heredity, and smoking.

Decreasing or eliminating any of these factors will decrease the rate of heart disease.

The lipid hypothesis is simply that - it is a partial truth. There is no doubt that lipids play a role in cardiovascular disease but they certainly do not explain everything. Perhaps not even most things. The reason that physicians focus on lipids is that we can manipulate them with drugs. The other factors - and there are a long list under study - are not truly modifiable. At least not yet. We are trying. And until better intervention becomes available treating lipids is the best way to go at present. Prescribing lipids lowering drugs should not be done in an isolated fashion but rather as an adjunct to life style modification. The body works wonders when you work with it. Simple reliance upon pharmacology is naive. So far as 'knowing what the real causes' are I assure you the more we study cardiovascular disease the more amazed I am at just how complex the cardiovascular system really is. There are dozens of factors involved in the who what where when why of cardiovascular disease and our understanding is still quite limited. No one can seriously claim to 'know' all.

I hope he is right so that I can get off of the expensive Lipitor etc which is 90.00 a month.
Not sure who to believe. Cardiologist insist on keeping Cholesterol in the range rec. but others say it has no correlation to heart disease. Who do you believe? My BP good, waist size normal, blood sugar below 100, and walk 2 miles briskly every day. Am 75----

He may be, but I think you meant "smart", not "amrt".
