Does anyone know anything about this shot?I want to get one, but my friend went to try to have it done, and they said you have to be a virgen. Is there any truth to this?

That's not true!

A woman can STILL get the vaccine whether she has had sex or not.

The only benefit of being a virgin is chances of her already being exposed to HPV are slim to none, compared to someone who has already had sex.

Many doctors (including mine) suggest ALL women get the new vaccine, whether they have HPV or not or have had sex or not.

If a woman already has HPV it won't cure her of it, but it can possibly prevent her from contracting a kind of HPV she doesn't already have. The vaccine protects against 4 different kinds of HPV (two known to cause about 70% of cervical cancer and two known to cause about 90% of genital warts). Say, for example, a young girl only has one kind of HPV that the vaccine prevents. Theoretically, if she gets the vaccine, she'll be protected from contracting the other 3 kinds of HPV that the vaccine protects against.

You should visit your family doctor or an OBGYN and ask them about getting the vaccine and tell your friend to see a different doctor. You could also check out the sites below for more information:

There is absolutely no truth to the fact that you have to be a virgin. Anyone can get it. If you are between the ages of like 13 and 18 or 20 or something like that then most health departments will do it for a very low cost or free. It's 3 shots to complete it. I just received my 2nd shot and I am 23 years old. It protects against the 4 main types of HPV...but there are 100's of them so always use a condom. This disease is spreading fast. It does hurt a little more than a flu shot or the birth control shot )depo-provera) but well worth it.

Ive had two out of the three shots already, you dont have to be a virgin I have a six year old son, and for anyone who doesnt know you dont have to be under 26, Im 29. It will hurt for about 5 minutes but nothing more. You must have all three shots but it doesnt guarentee you'll be fully protected. Good luck!

You do not need to be a virgin, but it work better if you have NOT come into contact with certain (or all) strains of HPV (human papilloma virus). Check the www.gardasil.com website for more info.
