i was prescribed toprol xl 25mg for palpitations related to anxiety my dr said he wants me to take it for a month then we will see how i am if its not fine then hes going to send me to a different cardiologist .over the last few months at my local hospital before i had insurance i had several ekgs, chest xray, echocardiogram, and heart stress test and everything came back fine..my question is i read that if the med is suddenly stopped it could worsen your condition or even cause heart attack..should i be worried about stopping it after a month considering im 21 male and my heart is supposivly healthy and its a low dosage.

You don't want to start or stop beta blockers suddenly. Typically, the dosage is slowly increased, and it should also be slowly tapered down.

I stopped a med (forgot the name) that I took for palpitations , it was also a low dosage, suddenly b/c I found out I was pregnant and didn't want to take it during such a critical time. It was a little tough on my body, but able to get through it. You should speak to your doctor about weaning your body off of the med. They may prescribe you a lower dosage, if there is one available, or maybe to even take it at longer intervals. I am also in my 20s. Hope it helps.

You are correct that reactions and 'rebounds' after stopping beta blockers have been described but these are not common. In addition - they tend to occur in older individuals with underlying heart problems taking higher doses. Based upon your history - assuming that the metoprolol succinate/Toprol XL worked - the worst that would happen is that the palpitations would return when you stopped it. There would be absolutely no possibility of a heart attack.

You should always check with your doctor before discontinuing any medications. Maybe you need to see a different cardiologist to see what he recommends. If the medicine doesn't seem to be helping make an appointment to return to your doctor, especially if there seems to be side effects.
