I suggest the book How It All Vegan, it has some amazing recipes that will taste just like the original if not better!!! The author also has two other books out and I believe you can view some of her recipes at amazon

You could go to happycow.net and look for veg*n restaurants in your area and the surrounding are, try some out and get a good idea.

You could also go to your local bookstore and browse the cookbooks in the veg*n section.

Also, vegweb.com is an excellent resource for recipes and food ideas.

I don't do meat substitutes, but my boyfriend does, who was once an avid meat eater but made the switch witnessing the benefits I've gained. If you feel they are necessary, I guess they taste exactly the same. He's been eating the Boca Vegan original patties.

Whole Foods Market (at least the one in Ann Arbor, MI, but I'm assuming they're all pretty much the same) has a gigantic bulk section where you can stock up on tons of grains and flours and treats and more. If you have a sweet tooth, they also have delicious veg ice creams and cakes and such.

And if you want to get an idea of what veggie people do eat (and see that there's not much we don't), check out these pictures if you want:

Good luck! :)

Hi, I am a new vegan too. I like to eat fast and easy things - cuz i work and go to school. Here are some things to try.

Morningstar chix patties are better than the real thing - in the frozen section of major stores like Meijer.

Boca makes great vegan burgers - many flavors. (frozen section)

Also, try the Smart Dogs - they are good - usually by the tofu in grocery stores.

And a good use for tofu is to put it in the blender. Easy smoothie recipe:

silken tofu - quantity is up to you - like 1/2 cup or more.
(silken tofu is like adding yogurt to a smoothie)

1 cup frozen fruit - your choice - strawberries, blueberries, or mixed fruit. ( use fresh fruit too - but frozen is great if you don't want to worry about it spoiling too quick and want a cold and thick smoothie)

1 cup Vanilla Soy milk.

Blend - if you need a good blender buy an 8 speed Osterizer - or other good brand blender. Cheep blenders are a waste because they don't crush the ice good. If you use frozen fruit don't add ice.

Soy Burger Crumbles - they can be used to make a "meaty" sause in spagetti sause - with noodles - VERY EZ

I don't eat poultry, but I do eat sea food.

I don't think I'll ever stop eating fish, because it is very difficult to go out on dates to restaurant and find a dish that does not have any animal product in it.

Some restaurants do have vegetarian plates, but many do not.

So I still eat sea food. I feel that is healthier, plus they are not tortured the way poultry, pigs and cows etc. are tortured in slaughter houses. I will not eat dolphin, whale or shark though. But the rest of the sea food just seem to be lower animals, so I don't feel as bad consuming them.

I eat a lot of salads, pastas, cheese pizza, rice dishes, tofu dishes and you can get the Veggie burgers made by Morning Star, they are the absolute best.

You need to dispel the Protien myth.
Here's a great article by Dr. john McDougall on Plant based Protien sources.

Stay away from soy products. Constituents of soy block the absorption of minerals and inhibit enzymes. Consumption of soy is linked to birth defects, brain, thyroid, and endocrine damage.

Use cashew milk instead. Delicious and easy to make. Place two cups of raw organic cashews in a good blender. Add cold water to just below the level of the cashews. Blend until creamy, adding more water if necessary. Once it is creamy, add more water while blending to the top of the carafe. May be sweetened with maple syrup, if desired.

Quorn makes a good fake turkey roast and fake chicken products.

Morning Star Farms have fake chicken/steak strips for stir-fry.

Boca makes a fake 'Italian Sauasge'.

Add tofu and you should miss a thing.

Try tofu. (Don't go ughhhhh!). They make it in different textures (extra firm, firm, soft). You can dice up and saute and flavor with spices and sauces and add them to things (soups, salads) and the soft one you can add to shakes in a blender with fruit, flavored soy milk, and can also add different flavored coffee creamers for variety. Not bad. I got used to it.
