Hadith Al-Qudsi is read as this.

"I am as My servant thinks I am. I am with him when he makes mention of Me. If he makes mention of Me to himself, I make mention of him to Myself; and if he makes mention of Me in an assembly, I make mention of him in an assemble better than it. And if he draws near to Me an arm's length, I draw near to him a fathom's length. And if he comes to Me walking, I go to him at speed. "

Read Luke 15, starting with verse 11. Its the story of the Prodigal Son and answers your question better than I can.

Allah Almighty sent us His messages through His prophets. The summary of those messages is that people should take control of themselves. Therefore Allah Almighty orders prayers five times a day, plus sunnah worship as well. There are the five times of prayer which Allah Almighty makes obligatory on His servants, but the Prophet, (s) did sunnah-prayers by day and by night also, because when we pray we are taking control of our limbs and our hearts. Allah Almighty says in a hadith qudsi, ****** "O My servant! If you take one step toward Me, I am taking ten towards you." ******

Yes, it is true... But the step that you take should be one where you truly seek God & NOT so & so belief in this religion and so & so in that. Afterall, he is our creator,ie, our father & naturally he would want us to be with him, away from all these material obsessions.
