I just throw them in the trash. I do the same with the regular 4 foot tube FLs (Fluorescent Lights) in my kitchen. Large user of FLs, like super markets, office buildings and all kinds of commercial spaces, are required to dispose of them in special ways to recover the mercury, but not home users, because the amount is so small.

Just as a matter of dialogue, rather than an answer. Perhaps what John is saying is that questions need to be well defined, in order to obtain the right answer. Not everyone would know what you are asking about, even though Carl obviously is more on the ball than some of us.

Wow, I was surprised not to see a serious answer to your question. CFL bulbs and linear fluorescent bulbs contain mercury, therefore if you're trying to help our planet by purchasing this type of bulb you must not throw them away with your regular waste. Contact your local recycling facility, they typically take them back. Otherwise check with your City Hall.
