I like having most raw veggies with a little bit of dip. I've been using a sour cream dip, but I really want to reduce my dairy intake. Is there a good soy alternative? What are some good recipes?

Hummus. It is made from chickpeas (garbanzo beans), tahini (sesame paste), olive oil, lemon, and garlic. Other things can be added, but it is a great source of protein. Oh, it is also delicious.

Well, for really great vegetarian and vegan recipes, go to www.fatfree.com and check some stuff out. Here is the dip section: http://www.fatfree.com/recipes/dips-spreads/

I really like this one: Artichoke Bean Dip

1 - 15 oz can navy or pinto beans, drained
1 - 14 oz can artichoke hearts, drained
2 Tbsp lemon juice
1 garlic clove, pressed
2 whole green onion, chopped
salt and pepper to taste

Combine all ingredients in a food processor and blend until smooth.

Variations: Add to basic recipe - green olives and chives or chopped
fennel and chives or chopped rosemary

I eat that one almost every day!

Hummus is wonderful and made from chickpeas which are also known as garbanzo beans. If you have a food processor or a blender then blend them up and tatini which is ground up sesame seeds. You may be able to find it ground up like peanut butter. If not start with the sesame seeds whole, toast them lightly grind them up with some olive oil and add chickpeas, parsley and garlic. You may add other things too but it is the most wonderful spread or dip. Very healthy too.

guacamole, salsa, hummus... Also you can make non-dairy versions of your old favorites by using non-dairy substitutes for sour cream, yoghurt, cream cheese, or milk. There are substitute products out there made with rice or soy that are very good.

try Spinach Dip Served In A Bread Bowl:

you will need:
1/3 cup red onion, finely diced
3/4 cup soy mayo ( i rec. follow your heart's vegan mayo)
3 cloves garlic, diced
1 tbsp tamari
1 tsp dijon mustard (regular mustard will do just fine)
1 bunch fresh spinach, stems removed and finely chopped
1-1/2 tbsp lemon juice, freshly squeezed

directions:
place onion, mayo, garlic, tamari, mustard and lemon into a medium bowl and mix thorougly. stir in spinach. place in fridge for an hour or so to allow spinach to soften and to bring out flavors.

when ready to serve, scoop mixture into a hollowed-out center of a round loaf of bread. voila!

*this stuff is yummy! :o)

bon appetit!

Hummous is made from chick peas, olive oil, garlic and sesame seed paste. There are many variations such as adding sun dried tomatoes or butter beans. Or you could try sate - ground peanuts and coconut and spices. Both of these can be bought from supermarkets and delis.
