Did you know that in the US in Oyster Bars there is a cuisine consisting of live oysters to be split open and served without cooking by sucking their goopy flesh right into your mouth?
So China doesn't sound so weird.

I've read about this in a book not too long ago. I think it was one of those books on how to behave in other countries, if memory serves me correctly.
It seems that a visting businessman was taken to a fancy restaurant by his Chinese host and hostess. The fish course was brought out, and it was still very much alive. The person in charge carved off thin slices from the fish and served them.
Personally, I would have been in the bathroom, tossing the previous courses at that point -- etiquette be hanged!
Edit:
And isn't there something called "drunken shrimp," where live shrimp are tossed into alcohol and served? Or is that Japanese?

The first time I was in China I saw a table of Asian men eating something from under an up-turned bowl. When I looked more closely, I saw that the bowl was up-turned to contain some live shrimp, that were attempting to crawl off the plate underneath. The men were munching away enjoying themselves. Not my cuppa tea!

people all around the world eat live seafood . . . you have sashimi in Japan, carpacchio in Italy, tartare, and ceviche from South America.
i'm not quite sure if there's such a thing in China, but there probably is. or you just might be confusing it with the Japanese practice of eating seafood while the animal is still alive, called ikizukuri. See here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ikizukuri

Once I was watching a cooking show and they were cooking a whole fish, Alive with tail and Head and everything. They took the fish coated it with flour, tossed it live in a Wok with oil about 2 minutes. Took it out, put it on a platter, poured a little sauce on it and took it to the table. It was still flopping and you could see it's eyes moving. Gross. I never forgot that one.

Yes I saw it happen in a private bar in Osaka.
A man came in and ordered his usual. A half pint glass full of tiny swirling silver fish, he drank it down in one gulp, the fish were still swimming.
They believe it's good for their sex life.
Not as bad as live monkey brain though!

In Singapore, we put live prawns into our steamboat. If you know what is steamboat, it is a pot of boiling hot soup with many other ingredients inside.
I am a Chinese living in Singapore.
