Biomass can be the mass of the organisms as they are – wet biomass – or the mass of the organisms after they have been dried to remove all the water – dry biomass. Live plants will be compared by averaging over several locations and by sampling plants in representative ways.
However in general biomass is compared dry to avoid variables with water.

Growth results in an increase in biomass.

Plant respiration functions to generate energy rich compounds like ATP , water, CO2, from food and oxygen.
Think of photosynthesis as storeing energy, as food, to use later. Food is broken down in respiration so the energy can be used for cell growth and building new plant tissues.
