St. Francis Top-Ranked in New York State for Treating Two Critical Cardiac Conditions
ROSLYN, N.Y., December 27, 2005 — Physicians at St. Francis Hospital performed more abdominal aortic aneurysm repairs (AAA) than any hospital in New York State in 2004, with risk-adjusted mortality rates significantly lower than the statewide average. St. Francis Hospital also treated more patients with congestive heart failure (CHF) than any other Long Island hospital, and was the only Long Island hospital with risk-adjusted mortality rates lower than the statewide average for the treatment of this condition.
"Research consistently shows that for complex medical conditions and surgical procedures, patients fare better in hospitals where doctors perform the procedures regularly," said Lawrence A. Reduto, M.D., Executive Vice President for Medical Affairs. "Thanks to our physicians, who are among the most experienced and highly-skilled in the country, St. Francis Hospital is dedicated to providing the best care possible."
An abdominal aortic aneurysm is a ballooning of the wall of the aorta, the main blood vessel that carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body. An aortic aneurysm can rupture, causing life-threatening bleeding. Abdominal aortic aneurysms can be treated by traditional open surgical procedures, or in certain cases, by placement of an aortic stent graft. Higher volumes of such procedures have been associated with better outcomes. In 2004, St. Francis Hospital treated 76 patients with abdominal aortic aneurysms, a higher volume than any New York State hospital and twice the volume of any other Long Island hospital.
Congestive heart failure, a debilitating condition in which the heart cannot pump enough blood to meet the body’s demands, causes shortness of breath, fatigue, and swelling of the ankles, legs and abdomen. The condition severely limits patients' ability to live independent, active lives. St. Francis Hospital treated 942 heart failure patients in 2004, a higher volume than any other Long Island hospital and among the top three highest-volume treatment providers in the State.
The hospital's Congestive Heart Failure program is characterized by personalized care, close monitoring and follow-up, and offers a promising array of state-of-the-art treatment options, including the latest medications and devices, surgical interventions, participation in national clinical trials, and a favorable patient-to-staff ratio.
Niagara Health Quality Coalition compiles an annual New York State Hospital Quality Report Card on New York's nearly 300 hospitals. The report card is published by the Alliance for Quality Health Care, a coalition of businesses, consumer groups and health insurance plans. It shows how hospitals handled 25 surgical procedures or medical conditions, including strokes, abdominal aneurysms and congestive heart failure. It includes death rates, procedure use and procedure volume.
St. Francis Hospital, The Heart Center™ is New York State's only specialty designated cardiac center and is one of the five busiest heart centers in the United States. A recognized leader in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cardiac disease, St. Francis is the only hospital in the metropolitan area with risk-adjusted mortality rates significantly below the statewide average for heart valve and valve/coronary artery bypass surgery, the most challenging forms of common cardiac surgery.
St. Francis Hospital is a member of Catholic Health Services of Long Island (CHS).
