Depends on the location. Trees are better than plants because they make better use of vertical space.

Most any tree works well in tropical rainforests because they grow year round and fast. In temperate locations, the best trees are ones that can be used for building, to take the carbon out of circulation for a long time. In areas farther toward the poles, planting trees may be counterproductive, their dark leaves create more heat, and CO2 removal caused by their slow growth does not make up for it.

Picking the best trees for a given location really requires expert advice.

Trees are not the best way to do that. Blue green algae is best. But if you prefer trees, whatever kind grows fastest is best. The carbon that gets taken out of the air ends up as part of the chemical makeup of the wood. More wood growing per year means more CO2 taken out of the air per year.

The best way to fight climate change is to donate to either a well known charity, or a non-profit carbon offsetter. Websites like www.CO2Debt.com screen charities for efficiency and allocate donations to them. You can look for other carbon offset programs, but a lot of them are for profit, Co2debt.com is a non profit group.
