Fish oil is indeed good for the heart, as well as the brain and general health. This is due to the omega 3 content. It has been estimated that traditional diets, those that had no processed foods, had a ratio of omega6 to mega 3 of about 2 to 1. People on these diets did not suffer the ills that plague today's society.
Cod liver oil is probably a better option as it has the added bonus of Vitamins A and D, of which modern diets have 10 time less than healthier traditional diets.
Look for a quality oil that has not been exposed to heat during the processing as omega 3 fatty acids are very heat sensitive and oxidise easily, causing formation of free radicals. Avoid those that remove natural vitamins during the processing and add synthetic versions in their place

Pretty much stick to the recomended doses, if the omega 3 to 6 ration goes the other way, this too can create health problems.

Some experts believe that taking fish oil (in any form) can help regulate cholesterol in the body, because fish oil has high levels of Omega 3. The regulation occurs through effects of the EPA and DHA constituents on Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARα). Besides cholesterol regulation, benefits include anti-inflammatory properties and positive effects on body composition.

As for how much, read the package. It should clearly lay out the amount you should take.

Fish oil contains Omega-3 fats and research shows that all omega-3 fats have cardioprotective benefits, especially those in fish. So yes, fish oil is good for the heart. As for dosage, take it in vitamin form and follow dosage instructions from there on.

The Benefits of Eating Fish

Fish, especially oily fish, is rich in omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. Research has established a link between eating fish and a lowered risk of death from coronary heart disease. The American Heart Association recommends that you eat at least two servings of fish each week. (One serving equals about 3 ounces cooked, or a serving about the size of a checkbook).

* Examples of fish relatively high in omega-3 fatty acids include salmon, trout and herring.
* Grill, bake or poach fish. Limit commercially fried fish and don’t add cream sauces.
* Prepare fish without added saturated and trans fat.

Read up on Dr. Dean Ornish's low fat diet, and Dr. Richard Flanigan's "The Caveat Way".

Your GP should eat more fruits, and a low fat diet. I think the max for fish oil is 3 x 1000mg daily.

Pomegranate and Blueberry are supposed to be very heart healthy.

Yes it is! My doctor suggested I use Fish Oil. He said it helps increase your HDL (good) Cholesterol. I'm taking 1000mg capsules 3x/day. Flax Seed Oil can also be used for the same purpose. He also put me on Niacin to help lower my LDL (bad) Cholesterol.

In general, the higher your HDL and the lower your LDL the better off you are in cardiovascular health.
