The food pyramid when I was a kid said we needed meat; the food pyramid today says we need meat OR legumes, soy, nuts etc..

That little bit of the pyramid is only the high-protein group.
Not that I take much thought in what a group (the govt.) that is so heavily tied into oil and dead cows says about what I should eat in a day. They are more concerned with who is paying them the most, not in what is best for the people.

Sorry.

I can tell you based off my experience that I feel better and have more energy than I did when I ate meat. I have been a vegetarian for five years. My doctor even said he noticed a big change and wished at least half his patience had as good of health as me so yes, a vegetarian diet is healthier than a meat-eating one. As for vegan diets I am not fully there but I'm working on it. I do notice when I eat cheese that I feel a bit more sluggish than when I don't. Vegan diets also reduce fat intake and slightly reduced cholesterol. It's very healthy. The meat-eating diet has become such a norm many people are reluctant to accept a healthier lifestyle including those doing the research. so many people try to base their information off biased research. It's hard to come in terms with a definitive answer but I would have to put my faith and support into a vegetarian diet.

I found a vegetarian food pyramid on my fridge that I found in a book. The "meat" section should be called the "protein" section. Meat is just an easy source for people who want to kill animals.

Grain Products: 5-12 Servings / day
Fruits/Vegetables: 5-10 Servings / day
Beans/ Eggs: 2-4 Servings / day
Milk/Alternatives: 4-6 Servings / day

Well, the "food pyramid" is created by the FDA, and they don't really have our health in mind. the reason they put so much meat and dairy on it is because they only care about serving the interests of the extremely profitable meat and dairy industries. The standard four food groups are based on American agricultural lobbies. Why do we have a milk group? Because we have a National Dairy Council. Why do we have a meat group? Because we have an extremely powerful meat lobby. It is actually very possible to be healthy on a vegan diet. in fact, most vegan diets are healthier than the standard american diet!

Actually if you look at the food pyramid, meat does not have its own area. It is shared with beans, nuts, legumes, etc. If meat had its own are than it would be necessary to eat it, but as you can see it does not. There is nothing found in meat that cannot be found in another source.

Nuts avacados and mushrooms are substitutes for meat.. The food pyramid is a joke... I am thriving off of a vegetarian diet.

That's because the people at the USDA are part of a corrupt, fascist government. Remember, this is the same government that gave us Bush and the Iraq War. The people who voted for him and his corrupt government are nothing more than disgusting Nazi scumbags.

They're just trying to get us to eat meat because the Repukes are all paid off by the animal-killers.

The food pyramid is nothing but politics. What it means is that you need a protein source, but it doesn't have to be flesh. Of course, the beef lobby couldn't allow that little tidbit of info to be made public...

The only nutrient not found in plants is B12 and many non meat foods are fortified with it. There is plenty of protein in beans, legumes, nuts, grains and vegetables.
