We give our kids an old fashioned birthday. What you see in the family Reunion movies on TV. We have 3 legged races, pie throwing, balloon races, egg races. We buy a bunch of dollar store prizes. The kids always have a blast. The cost is generally low.

It is easy to plan it. If you take it to the beach, bring a few old blankets and some beach balls. If you go to www.orientaltrading.com, you can get a lot of beach balls for cheap. You can have a sand castle building contest. Make it like an Hawaiian luau. You can also have them make ice cream buy making it in freezer bags or coffee cans.
Here is a recipe for pineapple banana ice cream.
1 can of evaporated milk (12oz)
1/2 cup of sugar
1 cup of crushed pineapple
1 large ripe banana mashed
1 teaspoon of vanilla
Place all the ingredients in a bowl. Mix to combine. Use a zip-lock sandwich bag and a freezer bag. Put about a cup of the ice cream mixture into the sandwich bag. Seal tightly. Put the sandwich bag into the freezer bag fill the bag with ice. Add about 1/8 cup of salt. Shake for about 20 minutes, use a towel because it will get cold. When the ice cream is frozen, take out the sandwich bag and rinse quickly under cold water. Cut a corner off the end of the bag and squeeze out the ice cream.
You can also use two coffee cans. This is really fun! Fill a small coffee can about 3/4ths the way full with the ice cream mixture. Put on the lid and use strong tape to seal. Place into a large coffee can. Fill the can with ice and add about 1/4 cup of salt. Tape the large can shut. Roll back and forth on the floor for about 20 minutes to 1/2 hour...depending on the room temperature. Remove the small can and rinse under cold water to remove the salt, open and enjoy! I have done both of these techniques and they work very well.

Themed parties are always cool. If your going to the beach have lots of games like beach volleyball, three legged races etc. Bring lots of cool drinks and snacks. Dont forgot the sunscreen. Also a movie marathon or dress up party would be fun too.

Be sure to invite plenty of adults for safety sake. Have a sand sculpture contest. Hide things in the sand and have a scavenger hunt. Limbo!
