I don't drink much and don't eat much sugary stuff. Is diet the main way to prevent or is there something else I should be doing?

Okay, you want the best chance to avoid diabetes? No problem... don't be fooled (like I was) that sugar causes diabetes... it doesn't. Since you have the genetic predisposition for diabetes, the best advice I can give you is to adopt a lifestyle as if you ARE a diabetic. You need to adhere to a good diet, keep your weight down, and get plenty of exercise. There's compelling evidence out there that fat foods (particularly dairy products) have more to do with becoming diabetic than anything else. At any rate, science is slowly revealing that certain fats in our bodies cause insulin resistance (the precursor to type 2 diabetes), not sugar. Your best chance of avoiding diabetes is simple, stay lean and fit. Read my diabetes info page for more tips:

It's great that you are taking a proactive approach to avoiding your family history of diabetes. The major things you can do to prevent diabetes include:

1. Follow a healthy diet -- limit sweets, fat, and alcohol. That doesn't mean having none of the above, but very little and always in moderation.

2. Maintain a weight that is normal for your height and age. Excess weight is a prime factor in developing type 2 diabetes.

3. Exercise every day for at least 30 minutes. Whatever you enjoy: walking, biking, dance, tennis, yoga, aerobics. Remember that household tasks count as exercise, like vigorous cleaning or gardening.

4. Talk with your doctor about your family history, and let him or her know you are actively working toward maintaining good health. Have a checkup every year so any problems can be addressed early.

Good luck, and best of health to you!

Watch what and how much you eat. Keep your weight normal for your height. Get some exercise or just do physical work. Have your blood sugar checked regularly.

Perhaps you can avoid it by doing everything right, but it is a hereditary disease. Diet is only a part of the problem, not a cure. You may have to take medicines in the future, so plan as if the worst may happen and pray that you can avoid it. There is no preventative action that is guaranteed to work, so just do your best.

I'm a 45 year old woman and was recently diagnosed as being a borderline diabetic. My doctor prescribed some medication, but before filling it I decided to do some research on the internet which led me to the methods. After reading this ebook and applying the methods, my scepticism turned to 100% belief. I noticed that my energy levels increased significantly and I felt more rested in the morning, my symptoms started going away.

I am very happy to tell you that I have been feeling better than I have felt in years and my doctor informed me that he will be taking me off my prescriptions if I keep this up.

I recommend you use the Type 2 Diabetes Destroyer to naturally reverse your diabetes.

Diabetes mellitus (diabetes) is characterized as Type 1 and Type 2. A very simplified explanation of diabetes:

Type 1 accounts for about 10% of diabetes cases. It is actually an autoimmune disease that occurs in childhood or adolescence that causes you to stop producing insulin. You cannot prevent this type of diabetes.

Type 2 happens when (typically) an overweight, sedentary adult with high blood sugars cannot make enough insulin to keep their blood sugar stable. Type 2 diabetes can further be designated as occurring with or without Syndrome X, which includes hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, and high triglycerides.

The American Diabetes Association has a link that may help you lower your diabetes risk. Please check it out at http://www.diabetes.org/diabetes-prevention.jsp.

You can take precautions to help prevent diabetes. The glycemic, index diet is a great diet for diabetics. Diet and exercise is your best defense. Talk to your doctor and have him refer you to a dietitian who can help you get started on the right track. If you can prevent the onset of the disease by changing your lifestyle and eating habits then hopefully you will be able to prevent having diabetes or having to take medication for it. Also, go to the American Diabetes Association website and take a look at their suggestions.

Alcohol is one of the worst things for bringing on diabetes. So keep it very limited. Keep you weight down, exercise, eat a healthy diet. There is some evidence that cod liver oil helps with type 2. avoid junk food.

Assuming you are talking about type 2 diabetes. Try and keep as close to your ideal weight as possible and do plenty of regular vigorous exercise, this keeps sugar levels low.
