Why is this under Ethnic Cuisine anyway? You can ask her "what part of Asia is he from?"

i know this is out of the caractor but so is u'r question, sorry bude like u, i had to. too

i liked what shawny said but have to disagree with jn. cultures can interact during ancient times and cant say who started it although china has the most influence to the west do to the fact that geography might had something to do with it too and being the dominent force in the region as well. its the dominent force that wrights the history through out history and has a louder voice but doesn't mean it's true. And like the mongolians, koreans, and the japanese r considered mongolites and the chinese and the south east asians r from the han race. so, how u going to say we're pilgrams from china, far as i know u chinese can be pilgrams of the mongolites and it is u chinese who distinguish u'r self as the hans whan i think in fact u'r mongolians aswell, dudes....

Thailand is a country. The fact that you want to ask her if she's a country makes me want to say that maybe you should sit this one out. She could be Thai. But you know she's Asian. You could be somewhat less blunt and ask where she is from, or if she was born in the US, ask her where her family is from?

not really sure how this is a cuisine question, but, I think it would depend on how you ask the question. I think saying something like" Would you mind if I ask what nationality you are"? or something along that line would be fine. another thing you may try is talking to them first and then once you have a conversation going ask them, maybe even after you talk a little about yourself first.

It depends on how you ask the question. I'm asian and i think if you ask the question politely and not make fun of her nationality, she would be happy to tell you. Whatever the case might be, it really depends on the person you're asking.

Well I'm Cambodian and I don't mind when people ask me what I am because I just love letting people know that there are more countries in asia besides China and Japan. And if you ask them what they are, you'll get to learn more about asians.

Not sure why this question is posted in the "Ethnic Cuisine" section friend!!

However, it is not impolite to ask for one's nationality. Just make sure you use the word "Thai" instead of "Thailand" in the question you ask her.

If you are not comfortable doing this... just check what her favourite ethnic (native) dish is (So now it did make sense that you posted the question in this section).

If you want to ask that and you don't want to offend anyone, just straight out ask, "what is your nationality"...don't make the guess about any country of origin...from experience and having a wide variety of friends, I have learned that it is not ofensive...

not really. my friend's Asian and i asked her that same question. she didn't mind at all. she just told me she was Chinese and Vietnamese. i told her i could tell that she was Vietnamese and she laughed. but it depends on the type of person she is. if she's nice and easy to talk to then she won't consider it as rude.

It's not rude. But I'll feel weird when this is the question they ask me.
