I understand that soy products can ease the symptoms of menopause, but that's all I've heard they do. I'm a vegetarian who gets probably 50% of my protein from soy, and my baby and I are quite healthy.

I don't think a simple answer exists for this question. Soy, wheat, corn, and dairy are the most heavily subsidized crops in America and I do believe that the health benefits have been somewhat exaggerated because of how much the government has invested in these crops and how many farms rely on them for profitability.
Modern, genetically modified soy protein isolate is also a long stretch from organic and fermented tofu. Is it bad for anyone? Probably just a very small percentage of the population that has that random allergy/intolerance. Does it have a bunch of phytoestrogen? Sure, but meat and other staple vegetables have a bunch of hormones too.

Neo, this is something I was thinking about just this morning. There are so many lies and trends in these nutritional "discoveries" - the TRUTH - yes, let me know if you find it!
People are always talking about "Drink 8 cups of water a day!" but we're starting to find out know that there may be such a thing as too much. In a few years there will be definitive "proof" that it damages the kidneys. Then it will be "Water is BACK!"
It's in the interests of the meat industry to proclaim "findings" about the negative benefits of soy (which they often fund themselves) as it harms the concept and image of veg*ism. On the other hand, there's alot of money to be had in soy products - not all of which are manufactured by concerned/veggie people, so it is in their interest to reject such research.
My solution? A glass of soymilk every day or so, and tofu whenever I crave it. No more, no less.

I've recently heard & read about Phytoestrogens I have read it is not good for either sex and there are claims about it swaying adolencences male bodys to turn gay while going thru puberty-May be hog wash, may make sense. I would say it is not good because this may interfere with a womans hormone balance or unbalance her body will go thru- not good for the fetus.
Also the packages product labels have warnings that do not recomend in infants less than 1 year(?)
After years of Poo-Poohing milk because of homogination damage along the contamination of growth hormones & antibiotics, I started buying fresh, pasturized CREAM ON THE TOP milk from Trader Joe's. I love cereal and I loved soy milk with it but, frankly - I feel safer with milk-Its 100% natural and just pasturized-can't trust soy or tofu until I read up more. Shirleys Cafe below I found is a great source for information for me.
If you go into Shirleys Wellness Cafe, Look up Canola oil- Your mouths will drop.
They may be able to help with your question too at Shirley's

Soy might be bad for women????!!! For the past three years I have had at least three glasses of soy milk a day and right now I'm 28 weeks pregnant. I can't wait to find out what people have to say. I do have to admit I feel great though.

If you are worried just avoid things that may be processed excessively like Boca burgers and things like that. Because basic soy products like "soy milk" and tofu have been consumed for hundreds of years by millions of people (mainly in Asia).
Unless there is some kind of allergy or issue with soy.

In general, NO! Chinese and Japanese women eat soy much more often than we do in the western world and manage to have healthy babies. Dont' stress over it. Take your prenatal vitamins and eat a wide variety of foods, and and your baby will be fine!.
