We hear about global warming, greenhouse effect, planting of more trees, species going extinct within some degree of time - does it matter to you at all and what do you try to do to save the planet?

I am a professional earth scientist and an environmental consultant, so it matters to me a lot. :-)

I try to educate people every day about what a scam Al Gore's baloney is. I encourage people to study some science themselves, and not just blindingly accept what the news, entertainment, and educational media try to claim. (I used to go around the state to give talks at schools, and it was amazing how many teachers were teaching things that were the opposite of what we were actually finding at the university lab.)

As a bottom line, though, I think the whole premise of "saving the planet" is misguided. It's not about saving the planet--it's about saving us, or "saving the planet for us." The planet was here before us and doesn't really have a care whether it is barren or whatever. But the question is, how does the way we use the planet impact our lifestyle?

We could all go back into caves and eat bushes, beans, and berries, but is that what we want? Likewise, we could have a disgusting, pollution-filled place to surround us. I don't like that idea, either...and that's the essence of conservation.

We are conserving a useful thing rather than exploiting and destroying it. So we aren't *saving* the planet, we are being good stewards of it.

Sometimes a little, sometimes a lot..

I am a member of a local land conservancy and we try to protect undeveloped land from development to save nature preserves and farmland..

Hopefully, it will have the dual effect of giving us all a better lifestyle and saving some of our environment a the same time..

How about you?

Sure, it matters. We conserve energy and water, walk or ride bikes when we can, eat organic vegetarian food, recycle and compost, plant trees and flowers, feed the birds, educate our children and others, and vote for leaders who share our values.
