Exercise, adequate diet(balanced) and six smaller meals a day to keep the blood sugar balanced. Some require insulin and some require oral medications it depends on the type of diabetes the person has. There has recently been new medications released on the market. There is now insulin that can be inhaled(rather then injections). A diabetic also needs to have regular check ups to make sure that the heart and kidneys are staying healthy. Certain medication sometimes are not tolerated by diabetics or can cause kidney damage. Really everyone diabetic or not should monitor what they eat. Diabetics should check for wounds or cuts on their feet everyday and make sure they are cleaning them and not allowing any infection. My husband keeps trying to get me to drink Camels Milk because some feel camels milk holds many cures. Overall maintaining a healthy active lifestyle is the best way to help.

Careful control is needed to reduce the risk of long term complications.
This can be achieved with combinations of diet, exercise and weight loss (type 2), various oral diabetic drugs (type 2 only), and insulin use (type 1 and increasingly for type 2 not responding to oral medication).
In addition, given the associated higher risks of cardiovascular disease, lifestyle modifications should be undertaken to control blood pressure and cholesterol by exercising more, smoking cessation, consuming an appropriate diet, wearing diabetic socks, and if necessary, taking any of several drugs to reduce pressure.

Ketogenic diet......... Unless you have the auto immune type of the disease that occurs in childhood, a ketogenic diet will solve most of the problems. And even if you do have the disease "formerly known as" juvenile diabetes, a ketogenic diet will help to lessen your need for insulin.
