My 2 month old has a swollen red top lip. Babies usually get blisters from sucking the bottle, but this looks like it is something different. Her pediatrician asked if i ever had herpes? No I havent, and have no signs of it. Pregnant woman get tested for stds and aids while pregnant, wouldn't it show up if I did infact have herpes? I asked this question under newborns and didnt get an answer, so I figured someone might help here.

The doctor didn't say it was herpes, she just asked if I ever had it. I had my doctor test me for every STD there was because I learned the father cheated with someone who had a disease. Everything came back negative. So I was just wondering if a test for herpes would be included in the testing. I just hope whatever it is, is not a disease or anything harmful.

She is asking you if you have ever had oral herpes (cold sores) on your mouth, she obviously thinks your baby has a cold sore on its lip.

80% of people have oral herpes (cold sores) and it isn't classed as an std. Even if you have never had symptoms of cold sores yourself, they are caused by a virus and you could still be a carrier. If it is oral herpes, don't worry, your baby will have just got it by being kissed by someone that has the virus. Most people catch oral herpes as children, by adulthood 80% will have it, it isn't an std and it isn't a big deal, so it isn't worth worrying about. Hope this helps.

To add: no, normally they wouldn't test for herpes. And if you did have genital herpes it wouldn't be causing your baby to have oral herpes.

Hi - in answer to your question, pregnant women don't routinely get tested for Herpes. If you have not had any signs (genital or oral lesions), then it is unlikely you have it, unless you have recently been exposed to someone who has (incubation time is usually <1 week). Once a person does have lesions, the lesions can be swabbed and tested for the presence of the virus. There are also blood tests available, but these can only tell if you've exposed to the virus at one time, not if you have an active infection. If your doctor thinks it's necessary, he/she could have the lip swabbed (the blood test likely won't work because the infant's immune system is not yet fully developed) and sent for testing. If this turns out to be Herpes, it's unlikely to have come from you if you have no lesions. Unfortunately, it could have come from any of the dozens of people who have kissed your baby (relatives, siblings, dad, friends, etc.) by now. Hope this helps!

herpes can usually only be detected when you are having an outbreak, and it is a very common thing oral herpes and I will tell you why, you can get it from drinking after someone who is having an outbreak kissing someone with it and even smoking off the same cigarette and that is why most people you see with cold sores, that is what it actually is and they are thinking cold sore no big deal and sharing things with people and it spreads like wildfire so it is not necissarily that you even knew you had it but that could very well be a possibility and it can be treated but there is no known cure at this point, be cautious and dont worry too much because there is really nothing that can be done except to educate her as she gets older and keep it treated with medicine, good luck and have a good summer.

I got clinically diagnosed with genital herpes (type 2) about seven years ago, when I was still in college and had a stupid one-night stand. I understand loads of young ladies will declare this, but I swear I had never done that sort of thing before. I just made a massive mistake that one time and suddenly I felt like I was going to have to live with the consequences for my entire life. The worst part was feeling I could never date guys again. After all, who wants to go out with a girl that has sores round her you-know-what? But since a friend shared this movie https://tr.im/DXWEC everything improved.

Not only was I able to eradicate all remnants of the herpes virus from my body in less than 3 weeks, but I was also able to begin dating again. I even met the guy of my dreams and I'm so blessed to write that just last week, in front of everybody in a packed restaurant, he got down on one knee and proposed to me!! This method gave me back the chance to be happy and experience real love. Now I want to enable you too by sharing this with the World.

My mother has herpes, my father never got it from her. My younger sister does and her husband never has gotten it from her. My husband does and I have never gotten it from him. (herpes in the form of cold sores on the lip) Some people are carriers and never actually get it...others get it and yet some still are immune to it. It is possible that you carry it, the father of the baby or maybe some one close to you came in contact with the baby while they had a flair up. It is nothing to be concerned about. A lot of people get cold sores...there are new medications that make them go away quickly. Hope this helped.

Herpes testing isn't always done regularly, like HIV. To find out for sure if you had that test, contact your prenatal care provider.
