I would think that no matter where you go these days one should be able to find vegetarian alternatives.
That being said, my suggestion would be stick to larger cities and metro areas, such as New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, etc.
I live in New Jersey, minutes from New York City and know there are loads of great veggie restaurants there. Even been to a few macrobiotic type places. Never been to California but I have this feeling with all the natural homegrown type people there that it would be a good place to visit as well.
Anyway, do some research on the net and I am sure you will find the right place to visit.

Good luck and good traveling...Hope I helped some!
P.S. If you do hit NY, you have to go to Caravan of Dreams on the lower East side. I am not a vegetarian, but I do enjoy food and like to try new things, and they are fantastic! - My fave is the Caravan Burrito

West Coast..Oregon is where I am from and it's the home to many of the vegetarian and vegan food companies that sell nationally. Victoria in Canada has a lot too, I have friends there.
I'd imagine California has a lot too, I took a road trip through there last April in 2006 and had no problem securing food. A place in Ojai had a store called Rainbow Bridge that served tons of awesome vegan salads and sandwiches.

Yeah, probably California would have to most veg places. But if you are looking for something different, how about come to the Rocky Mountains! Boulder, Colorado (just a half-hour drive from Denver) is VERY veg friendly. Lots of stores and restaurants that focus on vegetarian/vegan/organic customers.

Oregon and California are your best bets. Alot of "New Age" people there, and they tend to be vegetarian. Hence, alot of totally vegetarian restraunts.
Anywhere in America look for the following restraunts. They all serve yummy veggie burgers.
Ruby TUesdays, T.G.I Fridays, Applebees, Red Robin, CHilis.
West Coast, definitely.

I hear that Washington is susposed to be nice. Do not come to Florida, it's fish central. I live in a small town in Florida, and the only things remotely vegan and that taste good are veggie sushi from Japanese joints and the veggie burger at Denny's.

avoid the mid-west if you're vegetarian. you can find vegetarian foods but usually there are few options. and some people (in my experience) find that it's insulting for a person to be vegetarian since most meat comes from the midwest. though my cousin has been a vegetarian her entire life and she doesn't have too much trouble. she just ends up eating side dishes instead.

Indeed, I'm a vegetarian too and all I know is the deep south stinks as far as nice, vegtetarian restaurant food goes. I love it here, but usually the top menu items are meaty AND fried. I've given up on being vegan when eating out! Maybe we should move to California...

Dogs NEED meat to be healthy. I understand you feel uncomfortable with animals being abused in order for your dog to eat. You have to make a decision here. You either keep your dog and feed him kibble, or you give him away and get an appropriate pet such as a goat or rabbit or something. You shouldn't have got a dog if you don't agree with their diet. It's just not fair.

Although I am a meat eater, I live in California, and we are well known for our fresh fruit and vegetables. Almost all restaurants offer several vegeterian dishes in my area. You should not starve at all. You also might get a bit of sun and fun here too!

There are quite a few vegetarian places to dine throughout southern California. I would think any large metropolitan area with diverse cultures. A lot of Indian and Asian restaurants offer vegetarian options because of their religion.
