Not neccessarily.

Here are tips:

1. Take your time - my journey from meat eater took about a year.
2. Start out using some basic substitutes for the meat you are used to in foods where you won't even notice - ground meat replacements are available in the frozen food sections.
3. Leave meat off things that don't need it - pizza, salad, spag, etc.
4. Get some good cookbooks when you are ready to branch into more interesting foods - Moosewood books and New Farm Vegetarian are two of my favorites.
5. If you are worried about what to eat check out the book "Diet for a New America" it will cover many of the health questions.

There are no guarantee on losing weight being a vegetarian if you do lose any weight at all it won't be to the point of becoming grossly skinny meat/dairy products are not the only thing that make a person gain weight add sweets, stress, alcohol, natural fats which can be found in various nuts, etc.

I frequently hear two opposing myths espoused: That vegetarians are the healthiest people alive and that vegetarians are pale and weak. Neither one is true.

The bottom line is that there are healthy vegetarians and unhealthy vegetarians. The vegetarians your mom knows who look "sick and skinny" might not eat well or could have a naturally higher metabolism. Your mom does not know for a fact that they are skinny because they are vegetarian. I think most people miss the point that a vegetarian diet (just as a nonvegetarian diet) can go either way.

You can eat plenty of things while being a vegetarian. There's no guarantee that you'll lose any weight by becoming a vegetarian. You'll still need to control the caloric intake as well as saturated fat intake. Sure, you might lose some weight, but that would have more to do with other factors than just with being vegetarian.

I'm speechless. Please get a book called BECOMING VEGETARIAN (or VEGAN) or some other book on vegetarian nutrition. You diet is not very good. You won't lose weight that way and you certainly wont' be halthy eating just those foods. Losing weight from a vegetarian diet comes very slowly over time. if you put on ten pounds in a year you need to expect to take that long to take it off by eating healthy.

well i don't eat meat, but i do eat dairy (low-fat cheese, eggs, yogurt - all organic and free range) for the protein. i haven't eaten meat in 13 years and i look good. i am always healthy and rarely get sick and i am very happy with my weight. so there you go! i would read up on it. that's what i did. just to make sure you do it the right way.

Just don't make the common mistake and replace meat with cheese.

If you focus on eating a variety of vegetables, fruit, grains and beans you'll get HEALTHIER, if not thinner.

Limit the dairy!

what you eat might matter a bit but how much food you eat and how you exercise will determine your weight. Also you probably shouldn't start a sentence with "like" it immature and speaks poorly of your intelect
