It is an informal affair in my basement and it will be a buffet style and I was wondering if there should be a main dish and if so, what would it be?

If you are doing a buffet style, there is no need for a "main" dish. I would recomend small, finger foods. Finger sandwiches, fruit and veggie platter, and of course a dessert!

I spent a lot of time typing this up for another question that wasn't available for answering anymore. Sorry it doesn't answer your question, but you may find it helpful:

Dirty Diaper game-
turn the napkin so it's making a diamond shape
fold the bottom corner up to the center & then fold the top corner down & slighlty overlapping the center.
fold one side in to the center & overlap with the other side.
seal with a diaper pin sticker (I made mine on the computer, printed them on labels & then cut them out).
The result will be a square. Cut the bottom two corners off with scissors that have a decorative blade & it will end up looking like leg holes. You can buy small clothes pins and super glue them to the back.
For however many winners you'd like, smudge a small amount of spicy brown mustard inside those diapers.
Arrange the diapers on a table or in a basket & be sure everyone who attends wears one.
Before opening gifts, announce that everyone can open their diapers & if there's a "special surprise" in there, they win!!

Ribbon game:
We also had every guest cut off the amount of ribbon from a spool that they though would wrap around the mother-to-be's waist perfectly. I then brought the mother-to-be around to each guest & sized them up. She's pregnant with twins, so it was funny when the ribbon could wrap around her twice.

Timer:
Lastly, randomly set a timer while the guest of honor is opening gifts. The person who gave the gift that she's opening when the timer goes off is a winner.

Good luck- I know how stressful hosting can be!!!

To me a main dish means something that is going to be served with a knife and fork.. so NO need for that.. think along the lines of meat balls..... bbq chicken wings.... OR better yet... PASTA salads.... to help save on the cost there are many companies out there that make them in a box form.. cook the pasta.. add dressing.. and poof.. your done...

A fruit salad.. or fruit tray is always a plus...

If your doing this mid afternoon... keep it light... nothing to heavy.... veggie tray... fruit tray.. a salad.. something along those lines...

Late evening....... a dessert buffett!.. ONLY desserts.... again.. a fruit type salad.. or Jello/fruit mold... things on that order..

Of course since it's summer... the less heated foods the better....

Good luck and have fun!

Depending on if it is at a meal time or not.

for any time:
fruit on a tray or kabob
veggies/dip
chips/dip
meatballs
smokies in bbq sauce
cream cheese ball (recipe below)
nachos

if it is at a meal time, use any of the ideas above but add a center piece:

chef's salad
sandwiches (homemade chunk chicken salad on a croissant)
homemade soup
crescent chicken (recipe below)
crescent sausage (recipe below)

for Crescents:

Use 2 tubes of Crescent rolls. Spray pan. Unroll one tube and pinch separations together.
Add Filling.
Unroll 2nd tube and pinch together. Add melted butter.

For Sausage Crescent filling
1tube Sausage (browned, drained, crumbed)
1large Cream Cheese (room temp)
Chopped jalapeños (optional)
Mix above by hand
Layer onto Crescent
Add Cheese (pepperjack works well)

Bake at 350 degrees for approx. 30 minutes or until top is medium brown.

For Chicken Crescent
Layer in this order:
Mayo
Dusting of dill weed
Ham (sandwich)
Sautéed chicken
Any vegetables you like (onions, bell peppers, mushrooms, olives, zucchini, asparagus,
Broccoli for example)
Very small amount of ranch dressing drizzled
Cheese
on top of crescents:
Melted Butter
Garlic and Herb seasoning
Parmesan cheese

Bake at 325 for approx. 40 minutes or until very brown

Cream Cheese ball
(for 10 people)
large block cream cheese (room temp)
3 green onions (finely chopped)
1/2 jar dried beef (finely chopped, found closed to tuna in store)
1teaspoon garlic powder
Mix well, store overnight. Serve with a stiff cracker like Wheat Thins

Hope these help.

Make finger sandwiches but use a cookie cutter to cut the sandwiches into shapes like a bear or baby carriage

I put in cucumber, green & yellow & red peppers, onions, celery. carrots, even diced yukon golds... what ever you like... then chill and serve the soup with Hawiian bread.
