What it means is.... if he doesn't get with the program real soon and start losing weight, eating a healthy diet, and exercising.... he will be taking medication for the rest of his life.

It might but it also might mean that if he does a few things that he may not become diabetic. If your brother had a fasting blood sugar and it was over 126 the doctor would order another one if it was over 126 again the Doctor might do several things, Falling on the safe side the Doctor might start a oral medication, start your brother on blood checks every day, might send your brother to diabetic classes. I can't see your brother but often people that are Type 2 Diabetics are often over weight The Doctor should be advising your brother to lose weight, some people lose weight and that all they ever have to do. Your question was does he have diabetes, I can't answer that as I am not your brother's doctor but I can tell you one way or the other unchecked he will be come down with full blown diabetes, on the other hand if he does just exactly what the Doctor has told him to do he will live a pretty normal life. The key to his living normal is understanding what diabetes is and knowing how to make life work for you

It is a pretty dumb thing to say. Either a person is diabetic or they are not. It sounds like the doctor is trying to say your brother has mild diabetes. If he behaves himself, it shouldn't get worse, or will worsten slowly. If he doesn't behave, it will get worse faster. Your brother needs to read up about the GI index and should talk to a dietician to make sure he understands in properly. There are so many misconceptions about healthy eating, and now is a good time for him to sort them out. Diabetes is a drag, but the longer he can keep it controlled by diet, the better. Insulin is a bigger drag.

Diabetis has different levels. Sometimes it can be controled by diet, sometimes my pilss, and sometimes injections.

Your brother needs to work with his doctor to find the treatment that works best.

I have a friend who had it, lost about 50 pounds, and it went away.

Best wishes.

Joe

"The most common form of diabetes is type 2 diabetes. About 90 to 95 percent of people with diabetes have type 2. This form of diabetes is associated with older age, obesity, family history of diabetes, previous history of gestational diabetes, physical inactivity, and ethnicity. About 80 percent of people with type 2 diabetes are overweight."

"The symptoms of type 2 diabetes develop gradually. Their onset is not as sudden as in type 1 diabetes. Symptoms may include fatigue or nausea, frequent urination, unusual thirst, weight loss, blurred vision, frequent infections, and slow healing of wounds or sores. Some people have no symptoms."

Sounds like your brother's doctor has detected at least some of the signs of type 2. If he does not treat it as directed by his doctor (often simply a matter of losing weight) it will get worse, with devastating consequences like blindness or amputation.

So be a good sibling and help your brother take good care of himself, okay?

it means that his blood sugar levels have been higher than what is considered normal for his height, weight and age.
His Doctor should recommend a Nutritionist for him and your folks to speak to. Some changes in daily foods, levels of calories and balance of carbohydrates will be the first steps. Regular exercise too if he is considered overweight.

In means he has just crossed the line that divides proneness to get something to having the disease. He will have to start a treatment, it may not include medicines yet, but it includes a diet and glucose tests every six months.
