It sounds like a pinched nerve.

To open up the vertebrae and free up the nerve, Lay on the floor and put your calves up on a foot stool or the coffee table. This allows it to open up and "unpinch" the nerve.
Lay that way fo 15 to 30 minutes.

Bending over from the waist and hanging your arms to the floor will work also, you just cannot do it long enough.

If you lay down, put thick sofa cushions behind your knees (even at night).

Sit on something hard when you sit. Squishy cushions contribute to the problem. Use a square of wood covered.

Take Ibuprofen to help with the Inflammation and swelling around the area. Place Ice packs on the area to cool the inflammation.

It will take a few days but this should work.

im not sure, a shooting pain? i would say see the doc asap.
has it come on suddenly? yeah you probably have got a piched nerve or something, be careful and dont do any excercise on it unless its warmed up first.
Also theres heaps of good back strenghthening excercies you can do (once this dissapears) to maintain your back. I have had pain for several years if u need any information, give me a call.

my friend had that and it had something to do with the nerves.
and if you sit down it runs straight down to ur legs. if that happens the put a hot water bottle on ur lower back and go to the doctors.
