The wallpaper is pretty uniform and difficult to remove, so I'm checking here at Yahoo Answers how lazy it is to even be thinking of painting over wallpaper.

It is a mistake. Eventually the wall paper will start to peel off and you will have an even bigger mess to deal with. It is easier and better now to steam off the wall paper with out all of the paint on it. You will also have a better paint surface. In the long run this is the best way to do it.
I use to do home remodels as well as cabinetry and custom furniture for a living.

I have often painted over wallpaper. It isn't hard. Just make certain that when you prime it first (and you must!) use an oil-based primer such as Bull's Eye 1-2-3 or Kilz. This will seal the wallpaper and give you the best base for painting over it. Do not use water based primer, as this will lift the wallpaper.

It's not lazy and the wallpaper can look amazing after it's painted, especially if it has any texture in it.

It's not difficult or dumb to paint over wallpaper as long as you know a couple of things. First of all make sure it is adhered good and not peeling anywhere corners etc. If it is re-glue it with wallpaper glue. Call a wallpaper store to be sure; since it has been a long time since I have done this! But it seems to me you have you use an oil base paint. I am sure that a certain kind of paint is used and I think it is oil based. Take 5 and call. It is a whole lot easier than removing if you have lots of ground to cover!

Its not hard at all!

You can use either latex or enamel paint, and if the wall paper is on "good", then you have no problem.

If its not, and it has huge gaps where its come off in chunks, then its best to remove it, because you would have to "smooth" it out with a skim coat of joint compound (prime it if you put this on), so that it doent have places where its evident that you did this.

I have painted over wall paper many times, but, it was "old wallpaper", and was stuck on the wall good...(this new stuff aint worth a hoot, because the glue comes off fairly easy anymore).

I wish you well...

you shouldnt paint over wall paper. there is a huge chance the paint will peel as there will be moisture under it.

remove the wall paper with a wallpaper steamer.

will take some time but best results

well I just finished remodeling my home that was built in 1938. Throughout the years there were numerous layers of wall paper and paint, with the final layer being a sprayed on texture and then paint. so really it is just about how you want the final project to look and how much time and energy you want to put into it. In my opinion. its not lazy.

If its tight to the wall and the seams don't show and the texture is either inoffensive or non existent, prime over the wallpaper and paint, but please don't tell anyone I was so lazy that I knew you could do it.

If you go to Home Depot and get "Diff" you mix it with boiling water and apply it with a sponge mop, the paper will almost fall off if you follow directions.

I wouldn't paint over the paper, you'll be able to see the texture and the seams, it doesn't look good.
