I don't know what kind of pedals I have on my mongoose shimano sora road bike. They are triangular with raised edges, right now they have a plastic toe holder and strap to hold your foot in. However it looks like you can take it off and use the pedal with a pair of cycling shoes...but I don't know. Does anyone know if the triangular pedal with raised sides is a type of pedal I can use with cleats? And if so what is it called?
Thanks.

You haven't mentioned how old your road bike is ... the last Mongoose road bikes with Shimano Sora drivetrains was back in 2004.

The "off the shelf" pedals for these bikes was a standard alloy or steel platform with both toe clips and straps.

That being said, if your pedals look like the image in the first link, you have what is now a relative rarity! The correct cleats for THESE pedals are PD 64s (made by Shimano). They're awfully hard to find, and extremely expensive. The pedal itself was designed to be more aerodynamic, primarily for triathlon and track racing.

See the second link for a discussion on the pedals, clips, and possible substitutes.

I would bring it to a shop and see what they say. It sounds like the pedal is made by the Look company - the same company that makes ski bindings. In fact the concept is fairly similar. You can buy a cycling shoe and attach a cleat to the shoe to bind with the pedal. Where did you buy the bike? Did they just throw you out the door without explaining? Service is crap these days.

it should be a look pedal. the good news is that they are quite popular, so if you go into your local bike shop and start asking to see some look compatible shoes, (or take your bike in and ask for what shoes are compatible) you should have a variety of choices.

theres not much downside to using the pedals, I guess that you would have to learn how to clip in and out.

happy riding!

That definately sounds like Look pedals. I prefer them over all the rest. But they could also be SPD-SL- similar to the look. If it doesn't say it on the pedal somewhere, like on the bottom or near the tension adjust, ask your LBS.
