I think Sir Robert Jones for whom the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Hospital in Oswestry is named performed a gold foil interpositional arthroplasty in a hip sometime in 1912. As for Prof. Charnley, I know for a fact that he was the pioneer in low friction total hip replacement using metal on plastic. The so called Charnley hip was composed of a plastic acetabular cup with a small stainless steel femoral head. His tests at his laboratory at Wrightington Hospital paved the way for the success of THRs around the world today.
