'Best' is a matter of opinion. Many digital slr camera makers have very similar products, especially canon and nikon. Both brands compete against each other make cameras that have the same performance. There are a few differences that each maker adds to their product in order to appeal to a certain market. For instance, canon has a feature in their high end cameras that allows you to use your eyes to focus on the subject. This will attract some people and enough for them to choose it over the nikon counterpart. Nikon cameras feature spot metering in their mid range cameras whereas canon does not. This will also attract certain people and influence their descision.

Another factor is the lenses. Canon and nikon both make good lenses for their cameras, there are some differences along the range, it is up to the consumer to decied which lineup they want to go with.

The BEST is prob the 39mp Hasselblad.

If you are looking at full sensor: The Canon 5d, Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II.

If you are looking for a current prosumer camera, both Nikon and Canon have models you should consider. Sorry to say, they each have areas where they excel, and areas where they are weak. Depending on what you plan to do will deterine the 'best'.

E.g. if you want a relatively good 10mp, but have radio controlled flash built-in, the Nikon D80 is perfect.

e.g. If you are getting your first dslr, the Canon XTI or Nikon D40X equal. Go try them out ans see which is just right for you.

Best is subjective. But take a look at the following sites and see what their reviews have to say. Steve's also has a Best Camera section, one of the categories is SLR.

Regardless of which brand is the "best," how do you address the threat of sudden obsolescence due to improved technology coming down the road. Perhaps the "best" is not a question of what to "buy" but rather where to "rent" the "best DSLR? "Buying" or "owning" the "best" DSLR at this point may be a very bad buy practice. It's a simple fact, that 90% of professional photographer in the field of fashion, product and sports coverage, "rent" or "lease" their camera(s); they never buy to own!

Good luck!
