Why do toasters always have a setting that burns the toast to a horrible crisp, which no decent human being would eat?

You are right Scorps - the frig-gen toaster manufacturers should either put smoke alarms on the toasters or make 'em so that they shut off when the toast starts to smoke (up the house)!!!

It depends actually on how long you toast the bread. I don't know what kind of toaster you got however. But you can control on how long you want to toast the bread. Usually, a perfect toast is golden brown and not the burnt one.

Some people like their toast almost burned. I met someone like that when I was a kid and all I could think was, "Oh my goodness". I like my toast on the lighter side.
