my daughters wants the braces and her teeth are very crooked - she is worried that she will be one of those kids walking around with braces later in life rather than now.

With regards to needing them - this is the rub. the dentist initally said she didn't need them, then sent a letter saying she did, we went back and they went back on the letter saying again she didn;t and now bingo another letter saying that she does !

If she needs them then you should be able to get them free on the NHS.
Does she actually need them or is it because you want them for her?

All dentistry treatment is for under 16's. If they are reluctant to treat your daughter it may be because they do not feel that she needs them, or that the treatment has been left too late.

However if you/she is insistent then they should do them.

I know you live in the Bromley area but if you can't find a dentist there then go further afield - Bromley's only 20 mins by train into London, after all it is your daughter your talking about

I didn't realise that you could get free braces! I don't know how much they paid, but my parents took me to a private orthodontist years ago and I assumed that was because they had to.

None of the dentists round where I live are NHS as far as I know, but we use private health insurance anyway, so I hope that you find somewhere, I've heard that NHS dentists are being phased out slowly.

Dental work like fitting braces has to be approved by the Business Services Authority. I'm guessing your dentist doesn't believe the work would be approved. So far as I know, you can insist that your dentist applies for the approval, and there's an appeals procedure if approval isn't granted. I'd discuss it with your dentist first though and find out what the approvals criteria are.

it depends on the severity of the case, the way the nhs is funded they will only pay for very crooked teeth to be straightened, it is up to the orthodontist to decide whether it is bad enough to be payed for by the nhs, usually ure dentist will refer you to them on an nhs basis, you will have a consultation and they will discuss the options and prices with you.
if the dentist does the orthodontic work himself then you will have to discuss it with him/her.

My gosh. You've found a dentist who gives NHS treatment? OK, so you can't get the braces paid for, but don't lose your dentist!
