When I was his age I never listened to anything my parents said but his hair really is a mess. Its curly too and he spends ages straightening it every time he goes out anywhere. Its driving us all insane. By the way he's 13.

The basic problem is he's not satisfied with it anyhow and keeps fiddling with it for ages and ages. He also hates the fact that its curly and I'm sure he thinks if its long it will curl less. I don't mind it being long if its clean but it now is hanging all over his face and he's nice looking but you can't see him for hair.

This problem has now become redundant. Thanks to everyone who answered. Son in question went out yesterday after school with his older cousin and got his hair cut off. He has now hardly any hair at all its so short. From a distance he looks bald since he's blond. We didn't ask him to do anything about his hair he just did it. He is very pleased with it and I prefer it like this to be all over his face and neck!

i would say if he is comfortable with it let it be. if you were the one that had to sort it out then i would say you could try telling him the difficulties you have in combing it. he's at an age where he is finding his own identity. in time he may well change it. at least its not pink or in a mohican, not that i'm saying there is anything wrong with that either. relax he will maybe smarten up when he has female company around. my son is always in the bathroom getting ready takes longer than me. but i'm proud he keeps himself clean.

Is this really important to you? Long hair is in style. Look at what kids in his peer group and at school look like and I think you will find that hair is a la 70's these days. If it is a big deal to you then I would just say " Paul I am taking you for a hair cut Saturday, I want it trimmed and not so long because it looks neater" But if he likes it and it isn't really a big deal, I would let him fiddle with it. He is growing up and part of that is being the person you think you are suppose to look like.

Give the kid some freedom. It's not you who has to straighten his hair every time he goes out so I don't see the problem. If he doesn't like your hair are you going to give him the chance to ask you to change it? The kid is 13 and is going with what is cool at school. If you start cutting his hair and telling him what to wear what do you think the other kids will do? I'd think that he would lose his friends and be deemed an utter nerd. Teenage years are tough to go through so I would leave him to it if I were you. If you interfere you will do far more damage to his life than you think.

Hey...Okies I dont have any kids cos im still a bit to young to do so...but i have a brother. When it came to his hair he wanted it the way he wanted it no matter what my parents said, and with them telling him to change it only made him not want to...Let him keep it how eva he wants it, dont make a big deal about it. Tell him you can take him to the hair dresser or barber if he likes and he can tell the hair dresser/barber what he wants, he may surprize you and get it cut into a nice style...if not then it does not matter he is trying to express him self and trying out different things...we all did it. My brother ended up getting a number 1 with a rats tail, my mum hated it but he was happy...hope that makes sence and hope it helps.

Be thankful he actually cares how he looks before he goes out, if you run him down for this you will no doubt wreck his confidence...be thankful that he's not dyeing it all colours of the rainbow or anything drastic..lets face it in todays society where drugs is a big problem amoungst kids thank your lucky stars your only worried about getting his hair cut.

Dude,That kind of hair is awesome.
And lot of times kids have their hair like that because it's the cool thing to do and it's really the "style" right now. If it's not Bothering him then let him make that decision on his own. And if he is complaining about it but he doesn't want it cut then he can just shursh.

We told our son his hair looked great, just like his Dad's was, and showed him a photo of his Dad in the early seventies with long hair, flared trousers and platform shoes. The boy couldn't get to the barbers quick enough, only trouble is he now looks like a bouncer as he has it cut so short. We can't win!

It's his hair, leave him be...you could take a really good photograph of him and make sure that you show it to lots of people when he's around. Shame is a wonderful way to conformity! But really, it's doing no one any harm except for your pride, his appearance is no reflection on you!

Why not let him have his hair his way for now? He's only 13, he's got pleanty of time to grow up and conform.
