....Most of the nasties seem to be out in the evening (UK), and there seems to be so many of them.

They aren't bullies, they are just nasty. Obnoxious people bating each other, like it's a competition to spew out the most hateful comments.

There are rude people everywhere, but online you'll find even more because a lot of people who wouldn't dare being so rude in person feel all strong and confident when they can be anonymous.

However, the best thing to do is to ignore them. While of course a few of the rude people are just people who feel very strongly about a certain topic and can't contain themselves, most of these rude folks are bullies. Bullies aren't rude because they care that much about the issue they're talking about, but they thrive on the reactions they get! Any time someone responds to them, either in a later answer or by posting a question like yours, they love it, that's exactly what they want. Either ignore them or just hit the 'report' flag without posting any response for everyone to see, and leave it at that. If no one would react to their flaming, they'd get bored and find something else to do, unfortunately on a large board like this there will always be some who will respond...

The guidelines say:

Be courteous. Yahoo! Answers is a diverse community of people with diverse opinions. It is up to each of us to be polite and treat each other with respect.

Do not - Harass, threaten, insult, or behave belligerently towards others.

Do not - Post racist, incendiary, or otherwise objectionable content.

Be a good citizen. If you see great content, give it a star or thumbs-up. If you see abuse, report it.

So if you see content that is nasty - report it. This may encourage that person to change their ways. If it does not they will get reported again and eventually have their account closed.

Whilst you may feel uneasy about using the violation procedure it does make YA a better place!!!

I know what you mean. Whenever I try to answer a question, I try not to be nasty and try not to give a one word answer. It really doesnt help the asker. I usually answer in long sentences that the answer may get full assistance. But for the people who do answer in one word :

May the Force be with them.

Don't mind the nasty people and never be nasty back to them. Ignoring them is much more powerful. They can't get at what's really important so don't let them leave marks on your spirit. x

good question, people can be Very nasty on here!! and there is no need
it does make me wonder if those people are the bad nerdy types who have no friends and no life and spend most of their time on here and need to get out into the real world!

They cannot express their feelings with their friends or associates so they come to yahoo answers and try to take
it out typing silly answers.

Depends on the moods of the people, the same person
is such a nice person one day and the other he is an a devil.

Take it easy

It's obviously easier to be nasty on yahoo aswell as any other chat rooms. You don't see their face like you would with a web cam so it's emotionless.

I think 1) they're not brave enough to say what they think to someone's face, so they hide behind a computer and 2) because, as the saying goes, they can dish it out, but they can't take it.

In their real life these 'rude and nasty' people are probably small insignificant mindless people who are bullied in real life and this makes them feel big.
