I think a larger-aperture lens will likely measure better on an optical test bench than a smaller lens, because it was made for professional photogs and probably has better glass in it.
As for better pictures, that's up to the equipment behind the viewfinder.

By bigger diameter, you mean the aperture, or the opening of the lens. Generally, that is the case. Having a wider opening allows more light into the camera. But if it is made with poor quality glass then you are better off getting one with a smaller aperture made with better quality glass.

In general, yes.
Other things being equal, a bigger lens allows a larger aperture. A larger aperture allows more light, which yields a better image.
It is possible to put poor quality, but large optics on a camera, though. So look for independent reviews of the specific models you are interested in.

Generally YES. But if the bigger lens are of poor quality or not in the right combination, it doesn't make any diffrence.
