Well, when you're friends, you find out who the person is and you get comfortable with them. And then you don't rush into things. Being friends first is a good thing. And if you decide that you don't like them like that anymore, atleast you can always fall back on friends and you didn't rush into anything more.

I was friends with my ex for a long time before we started going out. We went out for over a year, and he decided to cheat on me. So don't think that just because you are friends, everything will be totally okay. Don't fall back on "we were friends beforehand so it will be perfect." Being friends with someone and actually being with someone are 2 different things. Just thought I'd let you know that.

It's important because you can find out if this person is right for you. You will be able to tell by your conversations if you get angry or bored.
There are many advantages to having a friend first, and lover second. It is important to know if you share some of the same ideas and goals. Good luck!

being friends is very important I believe. It really doesn't make much sense to go further if you don't know each other well. Common interests and not common interests are important that way you are both individuals. Trusting- which is learned over time does he/she call when she/he says so. Does your mate respect you if you say no sex. Does your mate talk and act respectful no degrading comments no abuse. Does your mate listen. Does your mate have a sense of humour etc. Oh yes and does your mate work? I mean long term steady work not work a little here and there.
