Why do Christians spend their time reading the OT? don't you guys have the NT (which I think is more cleaner)?

70% of the OT is the God of Israel killing people especially the Egyptians. OK since I'm a Wiccan, maybe I don't know every thing of the Christian belief, so do you guys have to read the OT.

That God in the OT is so mean and violent, that's where Christians probably learnt their violent acts. The Old Testament should be banned. A very violent guy! So what happens to the story? did the OT God die? I really love the NT God, I wish he lived throughout the end, I think he died too.

Jews claim that the Muslims God (Allah) is the same as their God. That even makes the OT God the most violent ever!!!

And no, I'm not an Anti-semitic. It is the Jewish God I hate, not the Jews themselves. Christians just shouldn't follow the OT.

well i'm a christian so you don't have to listen to me but this is what I believe, take it or leave it, it's all good.

I read both the new testament and the old testament, why?
Jesus said I and the Father are one and that he came to fulfill the law, not to be a new God. Back in the Old Testament the Jewish people were led by God and when they followed him according to his plans they prospered and were blessed by him. They were victorious in battle for they followed him.
When they rejected God and his prophets which he sent, he would not protect them and even let them go into captivity several times.

Jesus is the same God, but he became flesh and dwelt among us (John 1:14). He did not come to condemn the world but he came to this world to save us (John 3:17).
Before Jesus came and died for us we could not have mercy and grace, we could not be saved for we lived in sin. The israelites lived by the law and those being the ten commandments and such. Jesus came die for our sin so that we could still be with him despite our sin for he was our sacrifice. But to get to your actual question of why read the old testament.

The reason I read the Old Testament is because while at that time no one could connect themselves to God, and while he was a God of blessings and curses, "the God" of the Old testament promises a savior in many prophecies, but also offers guidelines by which I can live my life. It provides so many stories of faith and redemption, which show me how I am to live my life and give me hope that even when I turn away from God like the Israelites did so many times, God always is there for me and only desires that I live completely for him.

I realize you probably don't mean to come off as anti-semitic or intolerant, but if you are, as you say, a Wiccan, you're being extremely hypocritical. You think that another religion's holy book should be banned because you don't like the way some of its believers act? That alone is against the most basic principles of your own faith, but I won't go into that since I assume you've studied enough of Wicca to realize that yourself.

For one thing, are you sure that it's the Old Testament that makes Christians act violently? Not just, I don't know... human nature? People have been slaughtering each other in the name of religion for all of recorded history. Before the Muslims did it in the name of Allah and the Christians did it in the name of Jehovah, the Vikings were doing it in the name of Thor and Odin, the Romans were doing it in the name of Mars and Mithras, the Greeks were doing it in the name of Ares, the Aztecs were doing it in the name of Huitzilpoctli, the Mesopotamians were doing it in the name of Baal or Ishtar.

I mean, if the Old Testament incites such violence, then how come the Jews aren't scouring the world in their own bloody killing rampage? If the OT was all you say it is, then they ought to be murdering people right and left, seeing as it's the foundation of their entire belief system. They've certainly got a good excuse to be pissed at everyone. And yet, they don't seem to be killing too many people, do they?

Now, I'm not a Christian either, but I've read the entire Old Testament and to me, it seemed like at least 50% of it was who begat whom and thou shalt not eat the liver of the bull on the sabbath nor place the ark of the covenant the wrong way in the tabernacle and so on and so forth. Yes, there's violence, but there's also rules and laws and history and geneaology, and the reason the Old Testament is studied even "now that they have the New Testament" is quite simple. It's like saying, 'why watch Shrek now that Shrek 2 is out?' Well, because the latest one is the sequel? Because it makes a lot more sense if you know what happened before?

For that matter, Islam is, for the most part, a peaceful religion. Lately the world has been seeing only the very worst of its permutations- the fundamentalist Jihadists whose hatred and violence is inspired more by political upheaval and the words of extremist leaders than by anything written in the Koran. Though it's supposedly diminished by translation from Arabic, I have read quite a bit of the English version, and it's composed mainly of more history and of sutras describing in verse the things one ought to do to live a good life (Care for your parents, wife, and children, don't drink alcohol, be humble before God, etc. Though you're not supposed to live too closely with infidels, there's no particular injunction to slaughter them without provocation or mercy.)

And... hold on, did you really say there that you think the New Testament god died? You're confusing God with Jesus, who was the one who died. The mortal body of Jesus died anyway, supposedly his soul's still hanging out up there with the Father and the Holy Spirit, doing whatever it is God does. Get thanked by Academy Award nominees and sports players. Talk to schizophrenics. Bless things. I don't know.

I think before you start criticizing the validity of other religions, you should take the time to learn more about them. You might be surprised at what you find.

I saw that earlier someone else also asked about why Jews are hated. I meant to get back to the person, but the question had disappeared and I could not find it. I am just so sick of so much hatred and arrogance in the world, actually. I think you might need to tell the little boy that you are Jewish. He should dislike people who are arrogant and cruel, and learn the right priorities. He should not call people "stupid," anyway. My sister's little boy used to do that, but was corrected and soon stopped. It has been proven that in the Middle East a Jew and an Islamic person as individuals can be the best of friends, so surely the two faiths can come together and find peace. Honesty is the best policy so do not try to hide what you are - if anyone has a problem with that, how very unfortunate.

Christians have to follow both the old and the new, because the old supports the new. There are things in the old testament that have not been full filled at this time. God shows things in the old that show how God thinks and what his system is. Genesis and Ezekiel are very important chapters. God's promise to Abraham is to be full filled to the end of days, otherwise God has lied. You need to understand the tribes, because God shows that he is gathering his people back together Ephraim (Great Britain) , Manasseh (United States) and Judah (Jerusalem). Things that were in place before the law, are still in effect today, like to pay your tithes.

Ancient people had a more warrior like society and their beliefs in what is acceptable is reflected in their depiction of God. The OT God is the exact same God as the NT God, just depicted in a different light. God is all-loving and remember the Egyptians were torturing the Israelites so they had to leave and battle just to survive. It was a different world then.

You are a Wiccan, at least that is what you had said ...... try reading some stories of YOUR religion, not the ones popularized after 1954, but the original compilations (So, in fact it can be classified as Pagan). Compare it with the NT, you will find some similarities (in fact you will find A LOT of similarities).

The peaceful and nice gods were rehash of other stories put together loosely, primary from mythologies from greek and the middle east.

to understand the new testament, you have to understand the old testament. 70%? check again. the egyptians were killed in a few chapters in the book of exodus. there are 39 other books in the old testament.

the new testament God IS the old testament God. the only thing that's changed is His covenant with us. if you doubt me, try reading the book of revelation.

you're reading the parts you want to read so you can find ammo, and throwing the majority of the bible out. it happens all day and night on Y!A.

Because he reflects the human shortcomings of the people that wrote him before more introspection and critique took place.I've heard it said Job brought knowledge of god to awareness as prelude to the new improved forgiving god of the new testament . Today new improvements are on the way.
As the Muslims reduced Jesus to a prophet so will the future come even more down to earth as the accessibility of knowledge grows into a society unafraid to question with new scientific eyes the efficacy and truth worth a free thinking majority.

Yes, why are you so full of hate? You stated in your profile "The Christian-pickers are always Atheists aka hypocrites." What do you call yourself? You have something to say about everything, but yet you are not educated enough to know the real material. Education first sweetie before you start bashing!!!
