I have THEE perfect solution. Birds would ALWAYS come and take the little bones shapes out of my dog's food.
I went out and bought a plastic owl. they're about $20.
But boy lemme tell you, it works like a charm. Everytime i go outside, i see all the little bone shapes still in the dog bowl.
Try it. GOOD LCK!

Put it in something your dog has to stick his head into to eat. Like for instance one of those cat littler boxes with a cover and the open door in the front. For larger breeds of dogs this will work find because they are big enough to use it properly. But for smaller dogs you can only put out what they are going to eat right away.
There is no other way to stop the birds from coming down to eat the food unless you relocate the food and replace it with bird seed and eventually move your birds seed to another location to attract the birds to.

There is a plastic dog feeder that opens only when the dog steps onto the plate in front of the feeder. This would stop the birds as they would be too light to activate it, and they would not know the food is there. It doesn't take long for the dog to be trained to use it. This might be the best solution in your case. Or feed the dog inside.

Ugghhh I hate it when that happend to me also :]. You just either have to keep the food inside like keeping a little bowl outside and a bit of it inside, or have feeding times when your dog can go eat the put the food in its bowl so the birds can't get it.

You could try uncooked rice. I know I can see the thumbs down flying now, but I would be concerned for the puppies health. Birds do carry nasty diseases. I wonder if a scarecrow would work? Can you put a mesh cover over the top of the kennel maybe, like netting? It provides shade as well. Our animal shelter does this.

stop feeding your dog outside!! if you can't do that ,put it in his dog house (I presume it has a house?).
Dogs should only be feed once a day, when you come home from work or ??, leaving dog food out for your dog, all day, can make it a picky eater., and in dog language leaving its bowl full all the time, makes the think that it's the floor that it gets it's food from., also when feeding your dog once a day, really makes you bond with your dog, just think how happy it would be, to see you coming to it, with it's big bowl of grub!!

Put it inside.
Or somewhere where the birds can't get to it...although they are so tiny....ugh, thats seriously a hard one.....
How about you set out bird seeds next to the dog bowl.

Don't leave it outside??!!
Feed the dogs, twice a day, and pick up any uneaten food. Don't leave it out there for birds to get in and poop/pee in. Feed your dogs on a regimented schedule and you won't have this problem!
Don't put poison in it - what if the dogs eat it?!!
