Aside from the practical uses of actually communicating with a much larger portion of the population, the deeper you get into language studies you are exposed to many different cultures and points of view that when compared to your surroundings might give you an unexpected and often more broad 'open-minded' stance on everyday issues. Once you understand the affinity for family warmth in Latin American speech, or the obsession over musicality of Italians, and how the french pursue beauty or the practicality of Anglo-Saxon languages your brain just opens up to new ideas so much more easily because you think differently.
The little nuances of language that linguists fuss about need a very diverse and open understanding of how we as humans (rather than Americans, or Hispanics, or Asians) think, socialize and process information.
There is nothing like being able to read the works of some of the greatest minds in the world in their original language without the bias that comes with translation.
I guess if you would like to be 'a citizen of the world' being fluent in at least three or four languages is one of the first requirements.

I studied varied languages at school and at university (French, i.e. my mother tongue, English, Spanish, German, Mandarin Chinese) and I'm now a professional translator... so I could say that being bilingual and + helps me put food on my table!

I grew up in a French speaking only community, but have now moved to an English speaking town for work; as you can see, being bilingual is really a major thing for me. I've also traveled a lot (exchange student, etc.), and you have no idea how much people appreciate it when you, a foreigner, make the effort to speak to them in their own language, even if you're not that good. When you learn another language, you open up to a whole new world of experiences. You get a chance to view the world from a totally new perspective... and I'm barely exagerating.

:-)

Because I'm Anglo, Hispanics often speak Spanish in front of me... thinking I don't understand. This is pretty entertaining and not so bright on their part, because half the people in South Texas speak Spanish.
