A big impact. Well, presuming that it would never happen, I would say most Catholic followers will not follow Catholicism anymore and go to another Christian religion or other world religion.
It would definitely affect not only religious organizations but also political organizations that have good relations with the Catholic Church :)

I don't think the pope would ever do that. If he suddenly woke up one morning not believing in God, (like I did), he would be traumatized by it and would probably try to pray his way back into belief. If he discovered he couldn't do it, I believe anyone of that high reputation would feel obligated to resign his post. The Vatican would say he was ill, or whatever, but I believe any pope would, in good conscience, abdicate his papacy.
Before making his final decision, though, I think he would go onto Yahoo! questions, incognito, and ask people what they think. So, Benedict, are you having an epistemological crisis here?

That would deal with about a billion christians, but then would most of them just shop around for another religion?
I do agree with the first answer though.
There'd definitely be some entertainment value in it.

Ha! Well, the fundies -- you know, the ones who think Catholics aren't Christians, even though Catholics were the FIRST Christians -- would be convinced that all of their paranoid 666/antichrist prophecies have just come true.

If you're Pope that's pretty much a sure way of getting fired.
Also, with his resume it's going to be hard to find another job ;-)

No impact. He would be deposed and replaced, it would be big in the news for a couple of weeks, and then everyone would move on with their lives and get over it.

It would make complete sense and explain the actions of the church... and him as well! The world wouldn't care - since the scandals of the Catholic church are more appalling than the revelations in your posting would be!

I really do not understand how proposing unreasonable circumstances like "If this alternate reality happened then what ..." are of any real value to people seeking God and spirituality.
With love in Christ.
