Activation is what you need to do in order to circumvent the 30-day limit. It's what you do over the Internet or by phone to register your Windows serial number with a number that is computed based on your computer system, so Microsoft can register this information and control that you don't go sharing your copy around, or install it on more computers than you're supposed to.

Validation is what Microsoft wants you to do for some specific services (e.g. free software downloads and non-security-related updates). I think it just check that your activation is still okay, and only let you do what you wanted if it thinks so.

So you need to activate after installation to use it for more than 30 days - validation of genuineness is only needed for special tasks (like installing DirectX 10)

I use Windows Vista Ultimate Edition, and I can assure you, this is not like XP, it's too new, there are NO cracks out at the moment that will allow you to use it forever, the longest it can go without being validated or activated, is 3 days. So just find a way to buy it is all I can tell you. Sorry!
