Ok a close friend of mine, (one who I grew up with) is and has been here illegaly. I've known him scence the 3rd grade and been friends ever scence, and I don't understand why he is still illegal!, He ranked 5th in our graduating class of over 400 students, going to college, and pretty much has the same life style as me, and now plans to join the Army; I guess What I'm asking is, Can the Army really help him with his legal status? or is there something he can do to become a legal citizen? is there a proces to do so??

Well, there is a good possibility that the army can help his status with the united states. While I was in the Marines I knew three people that were not citizens of the untied states. One jumped the border from Mexico when she was 3 years old. She was then able to become a legal alien and later became a US citizen. So don't worry they are not going to deport him when he trys to join. And depending on what languge he speaks he could get extra money every month because of it.

He can't legally join the army. The army can do nothing for him. He'll be caught at MEPS when they do his background investigation and deported.

There's no "program" for illegal aliens to get Green Cards no matter how long they've been here. After he's deported he'll be banned from reentry to the United States for 10 years. That's the law.

*****For God's sake people, the fast track to citizenship is for LEGAL immigrants who hold a Green Card. It's a violation of federal law for an illegal alien to enlist.

If he is an illegal immigrant he will not be able to join the army.
If he is a legal resident he will be allowed to join and it will help him a little bit to become a citizen

He can start the process of formal immigration... or getting his green card... He just needs to do it through the proper channels. I would guess it's through the former INS... now the Department of Homeland Security. There's been a sort of amnesty program in place for years, for folks who want to become citizens or want to get their greencard... if they ask, it can usually happen. Especially if he's really doing well and wants to join the military... shouldn't be a problem.

Well, I generally dont think illegals should be here, but hey, if he's your friend...

If he's been here illegally for so many years, shouldnt he have done some research into how he can become legal? That's the problem. Illegals think everybody has to find "a way" for them to become legal. That's not our job. It's THEIR job. He's your friend and I respect that. But I do NOT respect his illegal status.

I do think that joining the army will help his situation. He *may* get deported first, however, he can still put in to join, and there's always a fast-track to citizenship for those who serve.

This raises an interesting question about illegals that I had not previously considered... should those who did not *choose* to break the law (those here since childhood) be punished... Boy, am I glad it is not my decision!

actually he can join the army. infact the millitary is offering citizenship to any illegal immigrant that joins and stays in for a min of 2 years. he could probably become a legal immigrant on his own though since he has such high grades and knows the english language.

The army will expidite the naturalization process for legal immigrants, but I doubt for illegal immigrants. The smartest thing for him to do, in my opinion, would be to return to his country of origin and begin the legal immigration process.

that is tough...He has been here illegally for some time now so he might get legal citizenship. I don't know how the Army works, but good luck with your friend. I'm sorry I am not much help.

He is breaking the law. He needs to be sent back to where he originated from and do it legally. The laws are there for a reason, we need to enforce them. The senate did a good job on the immigration bill and we need to work on getting them out now.
