at about 5 or so my son said to me one day... mommy it gets hard, while pointing to it! I was shocked and didnt know what to say but the words that came out of my mouth seemed to work and satisfy him at the time... i said, do you have to pee cause sometimes it will do that if you do! He totally went for it and I was not lying since that is the reason it gets hard sometimes.

My son is 5 and has made comments like "mommy it is so huge right now!" I try my best not to giggle because he is so earnest in his admiration of his penis. If he asks why, I ask him if he has to go potty or if he has been playing with it. I explained to him that his body reacts to what he does just like sometimes he gets goosebumps when something tickles his skin. At that age, information is really on a need to know basis. You want to satisfy the curiousity, not encourage more questions about mature topics. Give him a simple answer he can understand and one that you won't be embarassed about if he repeats it because I guarantee that armed with such amazing information, he will tell a friend or two.

I would first of all teach him the correct word, penis and explain that some people call them wee wees or privates.
I would not make a big deal out of it, I would tell him that is a natural part of being a boy and part of his body.

By 7 years old, he should be calling it the appropriate name, penis. Just be honest and tell him sometimes it happens. Give it a few minutes and it will go down. Tell him it happens to all boys and leave it at that. If he has more questions, answer him honestly. No matter how uncomforable you may be about it, he deserves to get honest answers so he can grow up to be well adjusted and not ashamed of his body.

I'm not a parent yet, but I think with kids sometimes you have to explain things differently for them because they have limited understanding, but I don't think that prohibits honesty. Explain to him that the blood flowing inside his body is what allows his arms and legs to move, his brain to think, and his heart to beat. Then explain to him that when blood flows to his wee wee it's like blowing air into a balloon, in that it makes it get bigger and harder. He may accept that answer for now, but if he inquires as to why blood flows to his wee wee, just be honest with him. When he needs to use his wee wee, like when he has to go to the bathroom, it gets harder and bigger, probably because God thought it would be easier to use that way.

Dellas answer made me laugh and giggle. "it has to be straight to come out straight" I am not making fun of you, it just made me laugh. It was a valiant effort on your part and probably would appease any 5 or 6 year old. I have a 7 year old nephew and he has never asked me that, so I really don't know what I would say.

First of all tell him it is called a penis. It stands up when he has a full bladder and when he has been playing with it (as they all do LOL)because that is what happens to boys. Tell him it is nothing to worry about and is very normal and it happens to all boys/men. My son was relieved to find out it is normal and it happens to others.

tell him it is a mussel in his body and some times it just does that like some times getting hiccups it just happens
so you can try to ignore it when it happens or try to pee ?
hope it helps my son is only 1 1/2 so have not got their yet but almost at the period's with the girls.

Well my son is five and about a month ago he said " Mommy there is like this little ball thing" and I said where baby? And he pointed to his scrotum and said what it is. And I chickened out and said go ask Daddy. So thats my advice pass the buck. It's not the greatest advice but it worked for me.
