People who find it hard to believe in God, when was the last time you actually read the bible through and took the time too understand the meaning of the words?
I dont mean when ur a kid, because your boundry of reality was small so there were a lot of things to learn then and concentration could slip easily.
Maybe now is a good time to understand it? Or even just to see what all the fuss is about? It explains a lot, it may not make you believe, but i do believe it can make some peoples life happier.
If not why?

The bible is truth from god, not from cavemen. Its written like that because people in those days dont have intelligence we have now like science etc. I believe god wrote these words simply for his 'new' creation. God knows everything, he would know maths as it is his own design, he knows science because he created it, but us small simple human beings couldnt.

Today. Done so for 49 yrs. this past summer, and He has never let me down, though I know I have let Him down, but His arms are long enough to reach down to me and pick me up and we start over again. If I do not pray and read the Word, my week seems so long and gray. I would not survive well without His living Word living in me!!!!! Be blessed! ***To those of you who are unbeliever's and Atheist why do you really come to this site? Knowing in your heart that it is going to have things that you say bug you to death and you hate it so much, just why are you here? For you know full well that this is the R & S site. But, I am so very glad that you are here, for everytime you read the Word of God on here or anywhere you have had a taste of real Holy food. And, I will have had the chance to share the Word of God with you, so therefore you will have no excuse before God, that you have never heard His Word and your blood will not be upon my head. He says in Isaiah That, "His Word that is sent forth will do what He has accomplished it to do, and it will not return unto him void." Be blessed! Yes, there is talk of lots of blood in the Bible as one said here but, "There is LIFE in the BLOOD." Be blessed! NOTE::: To those who are trying to read the Bible through, it will become boring to you that way. This may work better for you and then later try reading it trhough, but there is no set rule that you ever have to do, the best way to read the Bible is what works best for you, and you are gathering information. You will not learn it well if you don't enjoy it and there is so much good in it along with the bad, but it all has a lesson to learn, it takes the bad to make the good, "For if we have never had a problem, how would we know that He could solve it." First- start with prayer that the Lord will lead you to where He would have you read for the day. For He is the best teacher and He knows what you will be facing for that day or the next. 2) Try reading some of Pslams, and then The Book of John. You can start with a small amount of verses or whatever you fill comfortable with. Or, you can start in a place you feel He would want you to read for the day. It doesn't have to be boring, for His Word is alive and well and it dwells in all true Christian's. Be blessed!!

I've only read most of the first two books (all of Genesis and parts of Exodus) and some other random verses pushed on me out of context for political reasons. Most of that was about a year and a half ago for a comparative religion class. I have no intention of reading much more of it, because what I read made absolutely no sense when compared with my personal life experiences. Its not that I'm against the idea of God (in fact, I find it hard to believe that there was no god or higher being involved in our history) but the God I saw in the Bible was awfully horrible and some of His commands and laws seem to go against nature and common sense.

It's nearly ten years since I read the Bible. That's not a long time for me, as I've a very retentive memory. Further, as a man of letters I must say I've only reverence for the Bible, which is the sourcebook for the greatest Western literature; of course it has exerted profound influence on the other creative arts as well.
Incidentally, I know your question will provoke a legion of village atheists. Just remember that they're living in a semi-barbarous state. Pity them.

Not for ages. I fully accept that the bible contains a raft of wisdom, moral guidance and teachings. Certainly western civilisation is based on much of what is contained therein or at least adapted from it. Where I part company is the belief that it is divinely inspired. Unless and until I can be shown proof positive that it is the word of god, then I'm afraid that it will be little more than a reference book for quizes and crosswords.

I read some today. I read it often now.
The problem is that if you read it and understood the meaning of the words. There are some downright hateful things in there. There are many contradictions. I suppose it could be a guide for my life if I wanted to own slaves, sell my children, or stone the neighbors.

yes being able to read the bible with understanding enables you to better appreciate what it's trying to say ....
yes applying what you read does make your life better,it equips you for life ,and every good works....
it has been said when you read a book you become a friend of the author ,you live his thoughts ,you get to know him...apply that reasoning to the reading and applying of the bible.

I try to read every day, or at least meditate on a scripture. More often than not, I will remember a scripture through a conversation or something that someone said. I will look it up or write it in my blog.
And it does my life happier, and filled with peace.
edit: I didn't see the hard to believe in God. perhaps you didn't want my input. sorry

I seriously disagree that simply reading the bible will instantly make your life happier. I've read it. Life's still full of ups and downs, no matter what ANY book says.

The whole thing, or just parts of it?
I was reading the Sermon on the Mount the other day... rather interesting. Very critical of people who judge others.
